{"id":651468,"date":"2026-06-22T02:10:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T02:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/651468\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T02:10:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T02:10:17","slug":"wakefield-trinity-pull-out-of-deal-to-sign-former-nrl-winger-for-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/651468\/","title":{"rendered":"Wakefield Trinity pull out of deal to sign former NRL winger for 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wakefield Trinity have pulled back from a deal to sign former Melbourne Storm winger Suliasi Vunivalu, Love Rugby League can reveal.<\/p>\n<p>Trinity had been in talks to sign dual-code star Vunivalu on a deal that would have seen him join their ranks for the 2027 campaign and potentially beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Vunivalu has been playing in France with La Rochelle after a career in rugby league which saw him win international honours with Fiji as well as starring for the Storm for multiple seasons over in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/nrl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NRL<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wakefield had identified him as a target for next season and talks were ongoing about a deal, despite him recovering from a serious injury setback.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, that deal is now off, Love Rugby League has been told.<\/p>\n<p>Wakefield Trinity pull out of deal to sign former NRL winger<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/club\/wakefield-trinity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wakefield<\/a> have ultimately decided against signing the player and have moved on to other targets.<\/p>\n<p>They did include St Helens star Harry Robertson, with the club having a sizeable six-figure transfer fee rejected by the Saints earlier this week \u2013 as first revealed by Love Rugby League.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They remain firmly in the market for an outside back with strike power, and are open to either a centre or a winger \u2013 with Oli Pratt likely to move into centre to replace Cam Scott \u2013 who has signed for fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/super-league\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Super League<\/a> side Bradford Bulls \u2013 if Wakefield sign a winger.<\/p>\n<p>Trinity\u2019s head coach Daryl Powell was coy last month when asked about a deal for Vunivalu. He said: \u201cThere\u2019s loads of rumours about \u2013 don\u2019t believe everything you read!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got no comment to make on it really. He\u2019s injured at the moment, that\u2019s all I\u2019ll say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Talks had taken place over a deal for the winger, but Wakefield have now moved on to other targets.<\/p>\n<p>Vunivalu is still pursuing a return to rugby league, with a transfer to Trinity now firmly off the table.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They have already strengthened their backline for next year with the arrival of legendary Samoa international Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and youngster Ned McCormack from Leeds Rhinos.<\/p>\n<p>With Scott joining Bradford in 2027, they are on the hunt for another new face.
