{"id":652134,"date":"2026-06-22T12:21:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T12:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/652134\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T12:21:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T12:21:09","slug":"city-parks-cooler-than-surrounding-streets-surrey-research-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/652134\/","title":{"rendered":"City parks cooler than surrounding streets, Surrey research finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Parks in towns, cities and urban areas can help protect residents from high temperatures and pollution, a study has found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Research from the University of Surrey has shown temperatures in urban parks can consistently stay cooler than in surrounding built up areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The study, which involved tests in Guildford&#8217;s Stoke Park, also found noise levels decreased by more than five decibels in park areas compared to parts of the town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Prof Prashant Kumar, founding director of the Global Centre for Clean Air Research, said the findings would help policymakers to design &#8220;healthier and more climate-resilient towns and cities&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The research comes as parts of south-east England continue to experience a heatwave and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvg5d133lg1o\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an amber heat warning issued by the Met Office<\/a> remains in force for Monday and Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">During the study tests were carried out in Stoke Park and nearby built up areas  throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Pollution levels during the morning were over 11% lower in park areas, while morning temperatures were also 6.5% lower, researchers said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Parks in towns, cities and urban areas can help protect residents from high temperatures and pollution, a study&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":652135,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[1397,90,56,54,55],"class_list":["post-652134","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/652134","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=652134"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/652134\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/652135"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=652134"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=652134"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=652134"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
