{"id":652990,"date":"2026-06-22T22:57:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T22:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/652990\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T22:57:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T22:57:10","slug":"hr-consultant-wins-english-court-case-using-ai-lawyer-in-apparent-legal-first-ai-artificial-intelligence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/652990\/","title":{"rendered":"HR consultant wins English court case using AI lawyer in apparent legal first | AI (artificial intelligence)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">An artificial intelligence law firm has won a case in an English court, in what is believed to be the first time a trial has been won using an AI lawyer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A freelance HR consultant, Tamires Camal Taquidir, paid the firm, Garfield AI, about \u00a3400 to send a legal letter and then issue court proceedings over an unpaid debt of \u00a37,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The co-founder of Garfield, Philip Young, called it a \u201clandmark moment\u201d for access to justice and said many small businesses have had to write off debts because the cost of litigation outweighed the money they could hope to win.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Philip Young\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/310.jpg\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"dcr-evn1e9\"\/>Philip Young of Garfield AI said the case was a \u2018landmark\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Garfield \u2013 which was authorised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/law\/solicitors\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Solicitors<\/a> Regulation Authority in April last year and can be used to make claims from \u00a330 to up to \u00a310,000 \u2013 prepared the case and then hired a human barrister to advocate for the client in court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The AI conducted all the legal work preceding the trial, which involved disputing a counterclaim launched by the defendant, who instructed solicitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It prepared four witness statements and a bundle of documents for the three-hour trial at Wandsworth county court on 14 May. The court found in favour of Taquidir and awarded her the money owed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Taquidir said: \u201cI was owed money for work I had done, but it felt like the process of recovering it could be too stressful, expensive and time-consuming. Garfield made it possible for me to pursue the claim and keep going.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen the counterclaim was brought, it was intended to intimidate me, but I knew I had accessible, cost-effective and competent support. I\u2019m delighted by the result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dominic Li, the barrister who represented Taquidir in court, said Garfield presented the client\u2019s case \u201cclearly and efficiently\u201d, but added: \u201cThe advocacy at trial remained essential and a fundamentally human exercise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The British legal profession has been shaken by a number of high-profile AI blunders.
