Keir Starmer\u2019s resignation after less than two years in office<\/a> leads every major paper on Tuesday, but across many front pages, images of the prime minister\u2019s exit are relegated to second place, with the focus already turning to Andy Burnham<\/a> the newly elected MP for Makerfield and leader-in-waiting.<\/p>\n

The Guardian leads with an image of Starmer delivering his resignation speech, accompanied by the headline \u201cStarmer bows out \u2026 as Burnham sweeps in\u201d.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Freedland looks at the rise and fall of the prime minister<\/a>, and asks how a man that won a landslide victory in July 2024, could be pushed out less than two years later, \u201chaving started no illegal wars, having triggered no grave economic crises, having been accused of no scandalous act of corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOut of time\u201d, reads the Mirror headline, under an image of Starmer and his wife, Victoria.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe stood up to Trump, lifted half a million kids out of poverty, protected workers and renters,\u201d the front page reads, before conceding the \u201cfailures were glaring\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Times turns to Andy Burnham<\/a>, and contrasts the image of Starmer at the podium outside No 10, with that of the newly elected MP for Makerfield taking a selfie in Westminster surrounded by the ranks of the parliamentary Labour party.<\/p>\n

\u201cBurnham angles for power\u201d, the paper\u2019s headline reads, adding that the former mayor of Manchester could be prime minister by \u201cnext month\u201d.<\/p>\n

The i takes a similar line, with the headline \u201cPrime Minister in three weeks: Burnham arrives for coronation\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Messiah\u2019 without a mandate\u201d, reads the Mail\u2019s headline, with the paper reporting on a poll of their own readers, 89% of whom say Burnham should \u201cgo to the ballot box\u201d and call an early election.<\/p>\n

The Telegraph describes Burnham\u2019s ascent as a \u201ccoronation\u201d, and reports on calls from Nigel Farage for an early election.<\/p>\n

Writing below the main story, columnist Tim Stanley sketched out Burnham\u2019s day in Westminster, under the headline \u201cHe\u2019s not the Messiah, but a naughty boy is exactly what Labour wants\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarmer\u2019s exit clears way for Burnham\u201d, is the splash on the Financial Times, but in a comment piece inside, the paper\u2019s executive editor says \u201cBurnham has done the easy part, but the challenges remain the same\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Sun notes that at the current schedule, Burnham could become prime minister on the eve of the World Cup final. Charecterising the day\u2019s events as \u201cBurnham\u2019s No10 coup\u201d, the paper runs the headline \u201cHe thinks it\u2019s all over \u2026 an it definitely is for Starmer\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Express uses its front page to mark the 10th anniversary of Britain voting to leave the EU, with the headline \u201cGive us a proper Brexit\u201d.<\/p>\n

Noting that the anniversary comes as the UK loses another prime minister, the paper calls on the country\u2019s politician\u2019s to \u201cdeliver the will of the people\u201d and finally \u201cbelieve in Brexit\u201d.<\/p>\n

Finally, Scotland\u2019s Daily Record notes that Britain is set for its \u201cseventh PM in just 10 years\u201d, under the headline: \u201cIt all ends in Keirs\u201d.<\/p>\n
