Millions of viewers have seen him tuck into some rather unsavoury dishes for a Bushtucker Trial on I’m A Celebrity, but this weekend, popular TV star Rev Richard Coles got to enjoy something loved in Northumberland<\/a>, during a visit to the region. And, judging by his social media posts, he very much enjoyed them!<\/p>\n It was back in the 80s that Rev Richard first shot to fame, in the charts rather than TV, when his group The Communards gave the decade one of its most anthemic hits with Don’t Leave Me This Way. In more recent years, Richard has become a very familiar face on the small screen, appearing as a contestant on both Celebrity Masterchef and Strictly, before heading in to the Australian jungle for a stint on I’m A Celebrity <\/a>towards the end of 2024.<\/p>\n Richard joined the show as a late arrival, alongside Love Island star Maura Higgins and ended up making it all the way to the final, as McFly singer Danny Jones was voted King of the Jungle. No stranger to Northumberland having also been in the region last year, the 64-year-old was back in Northumberland to attend the Alnmouth Arts Festival.<\/p>\n READ MORE: Sunday Brunch star and TV chef Simon Rimmer finds ‘stunning’ food on road trip to Newcastle<\/a><\/p>\n The annual festival’s headline guest for 2026, Rev Richard appeared at an In Conversation event at St John the Baptist Church on Saturday and, as well as entertaining his audience took the opportunity to pack a lot into his few days in the area. And one of the details he shared on social media was that he had enjoyed a real local delicacy, Craster kippers, that always come highly recommended by those who’ve tried them, including music legend Sting who had them at a local pub <\/a>during a holiday in Northumberland with wife Trudy Styler last year.<\/p>\n Sharing a photo of his plate of kippers, along with other snapshots from his trip, Rev Richard wrote: ‘I\u2019ve had lovely time at the Alnmouth Arts Festival. I was looked after tremendously, had Craster kippers for breakfast, did a gig, went to say hello to the brethren at the Friary where a lady was doing yoga in the garden, made friends with Martin Shingler, who wrote a marvellous book about Bette Davis, met two splendid sausages, talked to some children in marquee about Einstein\u2019s brain, overheard someone say \u2018I hate f****** puffins\u2019, and played with a steel band in the churchyard of St Andrews.’<\/p>\n The Craster kippers Rev Richard enjoyed(Image: Facebook)<\/p>\n Reacting to the picture of his kippers,. one of Richard’s followers commented: ‘I can smell this photograph!’ as another replied: ‘raster kippers are the best’<\/p>\n Book a stay in Northumberland<\/p>\n This article contains affiliate links, we will receive a commission on any sales we generate from it.
