One of the joys the Harry Potter<\/a> franchise offers is that virtually every follower of the Wizarding World has a different favorite character for an entirely different reason. The main trio of Harry Potter, Hermione Grainger, and Ron Weasley already earn enough attention on their own, but add in the sprawling universe of supporting characters and you get dozens of compelling figures with loyal followings. Additionally, the movies made changes from the books, so the franchise’s cinematic adaptations nearly double the number of characters to choose from.<\/p>\n

Early on in the series, readers, audiences, and even Harry himself meets Rubeus Hagrid, the larger-than-life character who helps introduce the titular hero to the world of wizards. Despite his impressive stature, Hagrid had to be a gentle presence, given that he was taking a boy away from the only family he ever knew. Throughout the entire series, Hagrid demonstrated his power without being a physically intimidating presence, making him a favorite character<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nick Frost is playing Hagrid in the upcoming HBO reboot of Harry Potter, but the actor’s recent comments tease a different interpretation of the character. Speaking with The Times<\/a>, Frost admitted he drew inspiration from John Coffey in Stephen King’s The Green Mile, describing Coffey as “huge, violent but childlike.” He went on to admit, “Some people won\u2019t like it … They\u2019ll go, ‘Not my Hagrid.’ And that is all right.”<\/p>\n

While it sounds like a cliche to claim that this new Harry Potter would be a dark and gritty reboot, learning that one of Frost’s inspirations was a character he might describe as violent is immediately concerning. After all, Hagrid’s presence, and specifically Robbie Coltrane’s depiction of Hagrid, was one of the most endearing elements of both the books and the live-action franchise, so it’s a bit jarring to associate the character with violence in any substantial way. It’s worth noting, of course, that Frost didn’t necessarily state that his Hagrid was inherently violent, so it’s possible we might not see those shades of violence that inspired his performance.<\/p>\n

The actor also explained how he did aim to honor Coltrane with his work in the project, but noted that the sheer length of the show \u2013 each book being told through eight one-hour episodes as opposed to one feature-length movie \u2013 required him to find new angles to explore<\/a>. The actor detailed:<\/p>\n

“I’ve tried to take what Robbie did and honor that \u2026 but also I\u2019ve got eight hours here each series, while Robbie had two and a half \u2013 there has to be a bit more to him … So: he\u2019s from Bristol. He\u2019s nice, a bit quiet.”<\/p>\n

We’re still six months away from the official premiere of Harry Potter, with there being plenty of time to witness glimpses of this new Hagrid that could alleviate all concerns<\/a> about a possibly violent interpretation.<\/p>\n
