Silent Night, Deadly Night<\/a>, and a couple weeks later, we\u2019re suddenly in pre-production on this one. We shot it in seven days and started post-production right away. Post was done in a few weeks, and now it\u2019s coming out.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cIt happened so fast,\u201d Ioannides concurs. \u201cWe found out we were doing it, then tried to prep as much as possible, and then we basically shot it, like, two months ago, and now it\u2019s coming out \u2014 so it\u2019s truly been a whirlwind.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was no time to overthink anything,\u201d Nelson adds. \u201cThe focus was just to make this thing and bring Jason back in full force.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sweet Revenge was shot on Birch Island Lake in Wisconsin. \u201cIt\u2019s the same lake that I shot my V\/H\/S\/85 segment on, so it was the perfect place to return to,\u201d Nelson notes. \u201cThere was familiarity. All the neighbors in the surrounding cabins that were a part of that short welcomed us back with open arms.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nelson describes the process as \u201cpure indie filmmaking. We got up there and made the best of what we had. That was a fun throwback to doing it the way that we all came up doing it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was something that was also very important to the people at Jason Universe and Horror Inc. They wanted to bring back that fervor of how those original movies were made. We did it just like that \u2014 a great crew, piecing things together, lots of problem solving on the fly \u2014 and I think that\u2019s really what helped us find that vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The role of Jason is played by Schuyler White, who pulled double duty as the production\u2019s stunt coordinator. \u201cSchuyler is a super physical dude. I had worked with him before with him on Wrong Turn and V\/H\/S\/85, and he\u2019s always willing to get down on something that I\u2019m working on,\u201d says Nelson.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen he came to the table as stunt coordinator, we started to talk, and he\u2019s this incredible stuntman, he\u2019s got all these world records, he\u2019s, like, 6\u20195\u201d. One thing that was discussed was we didn\u2019t want to go, like, like wrestler-Jason. So we were like, \u2018Schuyler just has the right vibe.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cWe dressed Schuyler up, and he just had the right size, the right demeanor, and he knew what shoes he was filling and just brought it the whole way. That was pretty exciting to see him kick into gear.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSchuyler, like Mike, is just such a fan and was so excited and so passionate the whole time,\u201d says Ioannides. \u201cSchuyler is such a fun person to have around and he\u2019s such a hard worker. You could just tell, every single frame, every single take, he was trying to do everything that he could to give us this icon.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been making these kinds of movies since I was a teenager,\u201d Nelson explains. \u201cJason\u2019s always kind of been that building block for making those kinds of movies and those kinds of scares and that kind of violence on film, and so it was pretty amazing to have that moment where he walks in and you\u2019re like, \u2018Well, I\u2019m actually doing Jason movie.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI just happened to be in the makeup area when he first put on the whole getup, and it was insane,\u201d Ioannides adds.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had Schuyler holed up in the cabin where we were doing all the makeup and costuming and stuff,\u201d Nelson recalls. \u201cThen finally, I remember coming outside and saying, \u2018Alright, everybody. Let me present Jason Voorhees.\u2019 And then he stepped out, and everybody on set clapped. It was a pretty surreal moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nelson is aware of the criticism of Jason\u2019s new mask. \u201cLike anything that\u2019s new, it\u2019s something to get used to. I understand a little bit of the pushback, because Jason has such a connection to so many people, myself included. I think when you watch the movie, you\u2019re gonna be swept up in it, new mask or not.\u201d<\/p>\n
He continues, \u201cWe were just like, \u2018Great, it\u2019s a new mask, but it doesn\u2019t matter. We\u2019re still gonna make it look cool.\u2019 For me, it\u2019s all about how you shoot Jason, how you light Jason, and sometimes, honestly, what you don\u2019t see in Jason that makes him just as formidable and fun to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nelson would be happy to continue the story of Sweet Revenge if the opportunity presents itself. \u201cI think it\u2019d be fun to see what happens next between Jason and a character like Eve. That would be something that I\u2019d be very interested in seeing and would obviously love to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMike, you really have been training for your whole life for this without realizing it. You are the perfect person to do this,\u201d Ioannides adds. \u201cI love Eve, I love what we made, and I would love to continue it, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt creates a new tale without diverting from the original material, and that is, I think, where Jason and Friday the 13th need to go,\u201d Nelson concludes. \u201cIt\u2019s what would get me excited, and I feel like it\u2019s what\u2019s gonna get other people excited.\u201d<\/p>\n
