\u201cThe problem is, you can never tell they\u2019re a narcissist when they love bomb you,\u201d Ellie sobbed. \u201cAnd my sponsor said I had to forgive him and make amends.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then she began hyperventilating.<\/p>\n
Ellie had been sober for four years and met her husband during her first year of recovery. John was older, charismatic<\/a>, and sober for 15 years. At meetings, people listened to him with near reverence.<\/p>\n John insisted they should not date because it would be \u201c13th stepping\u201d and violate the rules\u2014yet confessed he had fallen madly in love with her at first sight.<\/p>\n He told Ellie she was special. He claimed he could see deep into her radiant soul. But he also saw how she was getting in her own way and promised to help her fight her demons. She simply needed to trust him, follow his guidance, and work with the sponsor he chose for her.<\/p>\n Underlying Risks in Support and Recovery Systems<\/p>\n Ellie faced two hidden dangers. The first was John\u2019s undiagnosed grandiose narcissism. The second was being embedded in a system of support and influence that did not understand the dangerous complexities of narcissistic<\/a> abuse.<\/p>\n Many 12-step circles unintentionally reinforce the myth that no one can make you feel anything and that healing depends on releasing resentment, praying for the other person, and making amends.<\/p>\n Love bombing<\/a> becomes especially dangerous when manipulative partners weaponize therapeutic, spiritual<\/a>, or recovery language to normalize control and override a survivor\u2019s reality.<\/p>\n The challenge Ellie faced was not simply that John appeared charming and spiritually mature. It was that manipulative language often sounds loving, wise<\/a>, or even healing in the beginning.<\/p>\n How Love Bombing Functions as a Form of Control<\/p>\n Research increasingly supports what many survivors have struggled to articulate. The first large study establishing that narcissistic abuse can create post-traumatic<\/a> stress<\/a> disorder (PTSD<\/a>) symptoms in romantic partners was published in 2023 (Arabi). Among 1,255 participants, 97 percent reported emotional abuse<\/a>, 95.1 percent reported gaslighting<\/a>, 93.2 percent reported stonewalling, 76.2 percent reported induced jealousy<\/a>, and 78.6 percent reported love bombing.<\/p>\n In my new book, Ten Keys to Staying Empowered in a Power Struggle, I describe control as a defining feature of narcissistic dynamics. Even during the love-bombing phase, control\u2014not love\u2014is often the hidden aim. The goal is to secure attachment<\/a>, gain influence, and gradually destabilize a person\u2019s trust in their own perceptions.<\/p>\n People with high empathy, vulnerability, or over-giving patterns are often especially at risk because their emotional attunement can be exploited.<\/p>\n Recent research by Setyaningsih and Rakhmawati (2025) examined the hidden meanings embedded in manipulative love-bombing language. One striking finding was that exaggerated affection often shifts quickly into persuasion<\/a>, then control, and eventually dominance.<\/p>\n This helps explain why early red flags are so easy to miss.<\/p>\n Warning Signs Associated With Love Bombing<\/p>\n Be cautious when intense affection is paired with these warning signs:<\/p>\n Excessive certainty too early (\u201cI knew you were the one immediately.\u201d) This final point matters deeply.<\/p>\n
\nFlattery mixed with authority (\u201cI see your greatness\u2014and I know exactly what\u2019s wrong with you.\u201d)
\nAccelerated trust or intimacy<\/a> (Pressuring you to bond, commit, or disclose quickly.)
\nHelp that becomes control (\u201cTrust me. Just do what I say.\u201d)
\nSpiritual, therapeutic, or recovery language (Using it to silence healthy anger<\/a> or boundaries<\/a>.)<\/p>\n
