England were left frustrated in their second game of the 2026 World Cup after they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Ghana at\u202fBoston Stadium.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Three Lions knew a victory would be enough to progress from Group L on Tuesday, but will now have to complete the job when they face Panama on Matchday 3 next Saturday.<\/p>\n

England started brightly and controlled possession, but were unable to test\u202fBenjamin Asare<\/a>, with\u202fDeclan Rice<\/a>\u2018s stinging drive from a free-kick flying over the crossbar in the 14th minute, and that pattern of the game continued up until half-time.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some solid defending from\u202fThomas Partey<\/a> denied Jude Bellingham<\/a> an attempt on goal, before Rice headed over from\u202fNoni Madueke<\/a>\u2018s cross and Harry Kane<\/a> saw his shot from inside the penalty area deflected behind by\u202fJonas Adjetey<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was the first time since Croatia faced Belgium in 2022 that neither side managed a shot on target in the first half of a World Cup match, but England finally forced the first saved through Anthony Gordon<\/a>\u2018s tame effort just before the hour, which Asare dealt with easily.<\/p>\n

Asare then got down low to stop Kane\u2019s strike from the edge of the box, before substitute\u202fBukayo Saka<\/a> sent his header over the crossbar, with Thomas Tuchel introducing\u202fMorgan Rogers<\/a> and\u202fEberechi Eze<\/a> for their World Cup debuts.<\/p>\n

But Ghana posed a threat on the counter and only a last-ditch intervention from Ezri Konsa<\/a> stopped Prince Adu<\/a> from the chance to test Jordan Pickford<\/a>, but England looked the more likely to snatch\u202fa winner in the closing stages.<\/p>\n

Saka first saw his curling shot brilliantly thwarted by Asare, before\u202fNico O\u2019Reilly<\/a> headed Reece James<\/a>\u2018 cross against the woodwork, with the rebound falling kindly to Kane, who somehow fired over from six yards out.<\/p>\n

England Fail to Fire But Gu\u00e9hi Justifies Selection\u00a0<\/p>\n

After edging an entertaining six-goal thriller against Croatia, many predicted England to sparkle in attack against a Ghana side ranked 65th in the world, the lowest ranked FIFA nation that the Three Lions have faced at a major tournament over the last 30 years.\u202f<\/p>\n

However, Tuchel\u2019s side struggled to replicate the dynamism on show in attack here, particularly in the opening 45 minutes.\u202fEngland\u2019s 104 successful passes ending in the final third were the most by a side that have failed to have a shot on target in the first half of a\u202fWorld Cup game on record (since 1966).\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

But at the other end, the England boss will be pleased by Marc Gu\u00e9hi<\/a>\u2018s performance, who came in to replace John Stones in defence. The Manchester City defender won seven fouls, the joint most by a defender on record (since 1966) in a World Cup game.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

He also completed 126\u202fpasses,\u202fthe most by an England player on record (since 1966) in a\u202fWorld Cup match, and he could have even got himself on the scoresheet late on, had it not been for a clearance off the line from his header.<\/p>\n

There will be a\u00a0lot\u00a0Tuchel will take from this performance, most notably how his team can improve in attack. England\u2019s 19 shots were their most without scoring in a World Cup match since their final group stage game against Nigeria in 2002 (25), while they finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.28.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n
