Let me show you the science, because I think it’s wild.”

He continued to reveal that, according to a Mayo Clinic study, those who knitted and took part in crafts were 30 to 50 per cent less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment — a stage that comes directly before dementia.

How can knitting prevent dementia?

Although it might seem surprising that a pastime often considered a ‘grandma hobby’ could be so good for our brains, Neil elaborated on exactly why it works. “Knitting forces both the hands into coordinated, complex movement, which builds what scientists call a cognitive reserve,” he explained.

He continued: “The logical side counts the stitches, the creative side reads the pattern. But the brain stuff isn’t just the start.”

Other health benefits of knitting.

Beyond helping to ward off dementia, scientific research has revealed that knitting delivers a host of other advantages, both physically and mentally. To begin with, Neil pointed out that the process of knitting has been shown to ‘kill pain’ throughout the body.

Neil explained. “Pain isn’t just made in your knee, it’s made in your brain. And your brain can only process so much at once.”

“Knitting floods it with signals that crowd the pain out,” he added. “This is real enough that UK pain clinics now prescribe it.”

Content cannot be displayed without consent

What’s more, knitting has also been found to work as a powerful antidepressant. In a survey involving 3,500 knitters, 81 per cent of those with clinical depression reported feeling happier after knitting, with over half describing themselves as feeling ‘very happy’.

“Finishing even a few rows triggers dopamine. Your brain rewards you for making something with your hands. Scientists call it reward or effort driven reward,” Neil explained.

Should you need further persuasion to pick up the needles, knitting has also been connected to reducing blood pressure. This is down to the repetitive rhythm of knitting activating the same calming response as meditation.

“Heart rate drops, cortisol drops. But unlike meditation, you end up holding a scarf,” Neil explained.

He went on to say: “And here’s a part I love. Knitting can last into extreme old age. Even when your scythe and sight and strength are fading. It’s a portable relaxation tool you can carry anywhere in a bag. It fights loneliness, which by itself raises dementia risk up to 40 per cent.

“So I think knitting is not just a grandma hobby. It’s a prescription you can hold,” Neil said.

A healthcare researcher has shared how one common hobby could help reduce your risk of developing dementia by…

[46
6612,854,7658,6647,102,22042,1906,88327,617,56,54,55
post-655612","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fitness","tag-blood-pressure","tag-dementia","tag-expert-advice","tag-fitness","tag-health","tag-mayo-clinic","tag-mental-health","tag-the-johns-hopkins-university","tag-tiktok","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
