(Photo by Dan Kitwood\/Getty Images)\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With more than three weeks to go before he can formally clinch the keys to 10 Downing Street, leadership challenger Andy Burnham is planning to make a major speech on the economy next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s part of an effort to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/speed-or-stability-bond-markets-strap-in-for-andy-burnham-coronation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reassure the bond markets<\/a> \u2013 to which he once said we shouldn\u2019t be \u201cin hock\u201d \u2013 that he is a safe pair of fiscal hands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/andy-burnham-speech-markets-no-10-r0phm6c0p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">according to The Times<\/a>, which reports that the former mayor of Manchester is set to double down on Rachel Reeves\u2019 fiscal rules.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This fiscal framework has been central to reassuring markets, so much so that gilts have routinely quivered at suggestions that the current Chancellor could be dropped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Who will be Burnham\u2019s Chancellor?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new MP for Makerfield appears to have narrowed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/who-could-be-andy-burnhams-chancellor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">his choice for Number 11<\/a> down to three candidates: Ed Miliband, Wes Streeting and Shabana Mahmood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Guardian, Burnham is leaning towards Miliband, whilst The Times suggests that Starmer ally Darren Jones could be poised to put his hat in the ring for leader amidst worries about economic direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is vanishingly unlikely that Jones would win \u2013 and it would be tricky too for him to get the necessary 81 MP nominations \u2013 but team Burnham would face a substantial delay getting into Downing Street if he does qualify.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/city-investors-raise-alarm-on-burnhams-chancellor-pick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">City investors raise alarm on Burnham\u2019s Chancellor pick<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elsewhere, The Times reports that Burnham is likely to be given defence and security briefings ahead of the leadership election (if there is one at all).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Britain\u2019s most senior civil servant Antonia Romeo is thought to want access talks with Burnham and any other emerging Labour leadership candidate as soon as possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The key figures shaping an Andy Burnham government\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside of Burnham\u2019s pick for Chancellor, a central policy team is taking shape. Ed Miliband appears to already be working on a US-style \u201ctransition\u201d team, alongside Makerfield campaign manager Louise Haigh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Haigh was Keir Starmer\u2019s first transport secretary, who became his first cabinet minister to resign after revelations emerged of a historic fraud offence.
