Everyone Says Hi<\/a> have announced their second album \u2018Funny Cos It\u2019s True\u2019. Listen to new single Don\u2019t Underestimate Yourself\u2019 below as well as details of upcoming UK shows.<\/p>\n

The indie supergroup features Nick Hodgson \u2013 former main songwriter and drummer in Kaiser Chiefs<\/a> \u2013 as well as ex-Kooks<\/a> member\u00a0Pete Denton, Ben Gordon of The Dead 60s<\/a>, and Glenn Moule of Howling Bells<\/a>, alongside guitarist Oli Swan.<\/p>\n

Sharing its name with a 2002 David Bowie<\/a> song, the band released their acclaimed self-titled debut record in 2024. Now, Everyone Says Hi have returned with details of its follow-up \u2013 which is out on September 25. Pre-order\/pre-save here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The forthcoming \u2018Funny Cos It\u2019s True\u2019 was recorded at Hodgson\u2019s home studio, and produced by the musician himself.<\/p>\n

According to a press release, the LP contains \u201c11 tracks of intoxicating indie-pop\u201d and finds the group \u201cfirmly stepping into their own\u201d. Fans can expect a \u201chazy retro edge\u201d from the new material, though it is said to sound \u201cdistinctly new\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Everyone Says Hi have rediscovered and reinvented a \u201cclassic sound with a heavy dose of infectiously anthemic choruses and a knack for lustrous songcraft\u201d across the album.<\/p>\n

The project\u2019s lyrical themes are described as \u201cdeep\u201d and \u201cemotional\u2019, tackling the death of Hodgson\u2019s father to Alzheimer\u2019s in 2011, aged 60. Some of the songs were written from the perspective of the musician being a father himself to a young daughter. Another track on the record targets the MAGA movement in the US.<\/p>\n

\u2018Don\u2019t Underestimate Yourself\u2019 is a swirling nod to the 1970s \u2013 a decade that inspired the full album \u2013 complete with lush strings and guitar. The single arrives with a retro-looking official video \u2013 watch above.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis track is about my daughter, or more specifically a note to my daughter, as she grows up to remind her that she doesn\u2019t have to think she has to change,\u201d Hodgson explained. \u201cShe can remain her confident and bold self and tell everyone what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

For \u2018Funny Cos It\u2019s True\u2019, Everyone Says Hi adopted a more collaborative creative process than on their debut, with sporadic sessions taking place between May and September 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a big decision to record the whole album in my own studio at home. At first, I was against it because I was stuck in the world of, you need big studios for drums with engineers and assistants, but the result is a record we\u2019re unbelievably proud of,\u201d Hodgson explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe album is inspired by digital loneliness, social media pressure, modern life pressure, questions on what really matters and all that miserable stuff. I am a pretty positive person, though, and I try to pull it back from the brink with humour, hence the title.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cI think the approach to recording was informed by a rejection of modern techniques. I feel like with people making music with AI<\/a>, I want to do the opposite, go more old school, more performance-based.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the best thing about recording at home is that when I\u2019m not happy with a vocal for example, I can go back into the studio at midnight in my slippers and sing it again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to NME in 2024<\/a>, Hodgson revealed how Everyone Says Hi came to be after releasing his debut solo album, 2018\u2019s \u2018Tell Your Friends\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did the solo album, put a song out and Ryan Jarman from\u00a0The Cribs<\/a> texted me and said, \u2018Do you and your new band want to play to support The Cribs at the Brudenell in Leeds for [annual festive show] Cribsmas?\u2019\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t have a band, it was just me on that record. I said yes and then I got the band together. We played quite a few shows and it was really good,\u201d Hodgson went on.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn that first album I played all the instruments and everything and then when I got the band in I realised that this was better. I would play stuff in soundcheck, new ideas, and everyone would just start playing straight away. Everyone was so switched on, I was like, \u2018If I make another record, I\u2019m going to call them up immediately\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd also Pete the bass player, he lives near me and I bumped into him in the Virgin Active in Crouch End. It\u2019s like an indie gym, The Magic Numbers<\/a> were in there and loads of others.
