\n\t\u201cSupergirl<\/a>\u201d and \u201cJackass: Best and Last<\/a>\u201d fly into theaters this weekend, but neither will pose a threat to \u201cToy Story 5<\/a>\u201d on box office charts.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSupergirl\u201d is expected to earn $47 million to $50 million from 3,600 venues in its debut, while \u201cJackass\u201d is targeting a launch around $10 million to $12 million from 2,800 theaters. \u201cToy Story 5\u201d will tower above those titles in North America with the animated Pixar sequel estimated to bring in $80 million to $90 million in its sophomore outing.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSupergirl\u201d is the follow-up to last summer\u2019s \u201cSuperman,\u201d which rebooted the Warner Bros. DC Universe under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran. That film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, ignited to $125 million and ended its run with $618 million, a promising enough tally amid the overall decline of comic book adaptations. While \u201cSuperman\u201d had the benefit of centering on one of the most recognizable heroes of all time, \u201cSupergirl\u201d focuses on his cousin Kara Zor-El, who isn\u2019t quite as recognizable to the average moviegoer. \u201cSupergirl\u201d carries a price tag of $170 million, not including worldwide marketing expenses. Although the intergalactic adventure was less expensive than \u201cSuperman,\u201d which cost $225 million, \u201cSupergirl\u201d needs to resonate with audiences young and old to justify its hefty budget.<\/p>\n

\n\tMilly Alcock plays Supergirl, who travels through the cosmos with her trusty pup Krypto the Superdog. When she encounters an alien girl named Ruthye, she reluctantly joins her on a quest for vengeance and justice. Craig Gillespie, best known for \u201cI, Tonya\u201d and \u201cCruella,\u201d directed the film from a script by Ana Nogueira (\u201cThe Vampire Diaries\u201d). <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJackass: Best and Last,\u201d starring Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Wee Man and their other daredevil friends, is positioned as the fifth and final installment in a comedy series that\u2019s all about risking life, limb and dignity. Unless \u201cBest and Last\u201d wildly exceeds expectations, it will rank as the lowest opening in the franchise. The prior installment, 2022\u2019s \u201cJackass Forever,\u201d had a much bigger $23 million debut and ended up with $80 million globally. However, \u201cJackass 5\u201d cost just $10 million to produce, so it doesn\u2019t need to earn much to turn a theatrical profit. \u201cJackass\u201d began as a television series on MTV more than two decades ago and continued with four other R-rated reckless prank sequels. This installment could be tracking to a lower start because it\u2019s not entirely original; the film is a compilation of new and old stunts and skits.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cToy Story 5\u201d should continue a mighty streak for animated sequels, as well as a bustling popcorn season. Although original animation has been challenged since the pandemic, follow-ups like 2024\u2019s \u201cInside Out 2\u201d and 2025\u2019s \u201cZootopia 2\u201d were among the year\u2019s highest-grossing releases. \u201cToy Story 5\u201d will follow suit, with ticket sales at $176 million domestically and $328 million after just a few days in theaters.<\/p>\n

\n\tHollywood is having its hottest summer since COVID, with revenues just 1.8% behind 2019, the last pre-pandemic year, according to Rentrak. Thanks to original sleeper hits like \u201cObsession\u201d and \u201cBackrooms\u201d as well as new installments in reliable franchises such as \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d and \u201cScary Movie,\u201d the four-month stretch is expected to eclipse the once-reliable $4 billion milestone.
