The Rogue Trooper movie had its world premiere this week and reviews are in \u2014 and full of praise!<\/p>\n

The sci-fi action comedy written and directed by Duncan Jones debuted at the Annecy Animation Festival in France on Monday, a screening attended by the world\u2019s movie press alongside Jones, stars Aneurin Barnard and Jemaine Clement, producer Stuart Fenegan, Rebellion CTO Chris Kingsley, and Rebellion\u2019s Head of Film & TV Ben Smith.<\/p>\n

And Aneurin Barnard tackling a mugger outside the premiere wasn\u2019t the only highlight of the night<\/a> \u2014 the reviews have been landing for the first major feature film of a 2000 AD character since 2012\u2019s Dredd.<\/p>\n

At Deadline<\/a>, Damon Wise called it a \u201cfast, funny, visually mind-blowing old-school war movie\u201d that \u201cplays out like Starship Troopers as made by Ren\u00e9 Laloux, the Disney-gone-Dal\u00ed director of the 1973 French cult classic Fantastic Planet\u201d. Praising how it becomes \u201ca fantastical Apocalypse Now-style journey upstream through the hell of war\u201d, Wise says that it has less to do with modern-day James Cameron of Avatar and more with \u201cthe spirit of the James Cameron who made the first Terminator movie\u201d and speculates whether it will finally kickstart a \u201creal future of futuristic futures\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cA hellzapoppin\u2019 comic book adaptation,\u201d said Drew Taylor at The Wrap<\/a>, who praised the fact that the film was made independently and looks far better than that would normally suggest. \u201cIt\u2019s an absolute hoot,\u201d he writes. \u201cAn otherworldly war movie populated by anthropomorphic weapons, arcane mythology and the kind of go-for-broke 1980s fantasy movie spirit that is (sadly) in short supply these days.\u201d While \u201cgloriously overstuffed\u201d and \u201cpacked with characters and bits of lore, technology and philosophizing\u201d he says that \u201cencyclopedic knowledge\u201d of the source material \u201cisn\u2019t necessary to have a good time\u201d.<\/p>\n

And over at Screen Daily<\/a>, Wendy Ide says while Rogue Trooper may look like a Hollywood action adventure, \u201cit is distinctively British both in its sensibility (no Avatar earnestness here, just a bracingly sarcastic and pitch black humour)\u201d. This \u201cultra-violent near-future slaughter fest\u201d whose \u201cworld-building is undeniably spectacular\u201d and \u201cspace-ship crunching action and regional British insults\u201d manages to \u201ccritique the cynical economic motivations of endless, pointless wars\u201d.<\/p>\n
