A large motor neurone disease (MND) charity is considering expanding into Scotland, despite a fellow organisation in the country warning against the move.<\/p>\n
MND Association \u2013 which operates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland \u2013 will decide whether to expand its services into Scotland at an annual general meeting in two weeks.<\/p>\n
In a statement, MND Scotland, a smaller charity which described the two as \u201csister organisations\u201d,<\/a> has warned that the move would \u201cdismantle a successful partnership\u201d built on \u201ctrust and mutual respect\u201d for nearly half a decade.<\/p>\n MND Scotland said it believes the larger organisation\u2019s expansion plans are related to financial challenges the Scottish charity faced last year.<\/p>\n It was left \u201cfighting for survival\u201d<\/a> after its former chief executive and chair departed in October 2025 while it was navigating \u201can extremely challenging financial environment.\u201d<\/p>\n The charity said it made some \u201ctough decisions\u201d post-October 2025 and appointed new trustees.<\/p>\n \u201cSignificant progress has been made in financial management and governance,\u201d the charity added. \u201cWe are currently on track.\u201d<\/p>\n MND Scotland said its recipients would be \u201cbest served\u201d by the current model of collaboration, rather than the larger charity expanding and becoming its \u201ccompetitor\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n MND Association board backs expansion<\/p>\n MND Association stated earlier this month<\/a> that its board believed that the charity should apply to become UK-wide.<\/p>\n \u201cOur board has given this matter serious consideration,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n \u201cIf our members say yes, we will\u202fapply for charity registration in Scotland\u202fand\u202fdevelop a plan to offer people in Scotland\u202faccess to our services.\u201d<\/p>\n It said that even if members voted in favour on 8 July, pending regulatory approval, it would continue to partner MND Scotland, among other organisations.<\/p>\n In a statement to Civil Society, a charity spokesperson said: \u201cWe’re asking our members to vote on changing our [legal] articles.<\/p>\n \u201cWe want to ensure people affected by MND in Scotland have access to the same level of support services we already provide to people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\n MND Association recorded a total income of \u00a340.8m in 2024, above its spending of \u00a333.9m.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, MND Scotland recorded an income of \u00a32.84m in the year to March 2025, below its expenditure of \u00a33.65m.\u00a0<\/p>\n The smaller charity has reported operating deficits since 2022, its listing shows,<\/a> while the MND Association\u2019s income has been above its spending since 2020.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A large motor neurone disease (MND) charity is considering expanding into Scotland, despite a fellow organisation in the…\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":657498,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[59,57,58,50,56,54,55],"class_list":["post-657497","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-united-kingdom","tag-gb","tag-great-britain","tag-greatbritain","tag-news","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/657497","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=657497"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/657497\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/657498"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=657497"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=657497"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=657497"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
