Stuart Grehan is in dreamland after his triumph at last weekend’s Amateur Championship<\/a> earned him golden tickets to the Open Championship, Masters and US Open.<\/p>\n

The Offaly man got past American Matt Moloney on the 36th and final hole of the two-round finale at Royal Liverpool.<\/p>\n

The victory was a sweet one for Grehan, and it came with seriously attractive bonuses: qualification for the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale next month, as well as invitations to the 2027 Masters and US Open.<\/p>\n

It’s fairytale stuff for the 33-year-old, who retired from the pro game 18 months ago as the grind, and family commitments, became too much.<\/p>\n

He has since impressed on the Irish amateur circuit, claiming the East of Ireland Men’s Amateur Open Championship, the Irish Men’s Amateur Open Championship and the Irish Men\u2019s Amateur Close Championship.<\/p>\n

Success at Royal Liverpool was extra special however, and Grehan is still taking it all in.<\/p>\n

“It’s been very busy tryng to plan a few schedule changes, and obviously plan for the Open now in three weeks’ time, but it’s been great,” he told RT\u00c9 Sport.<\/p>\n

“It’s stuff you dream of. I was playing pretty well, I’ve had a pretty good year. You’re trying to do as well as you can and just get into the matchplay but I played really well in the stroke play, qualified nicely and then I ended up playing my foursomes partner from the Walker Cup last year, Eliot Baker.<\/p>\n

“Once I got through that game it kind of created a bit of momentum, and I played really well from there.”<\/p>\n

Grehan had father-in-law Dan on his bag, and he played a key role in calming down some frayed nerves in the climax. Grehan was three up with three holes to play but lost the 16th and 17th holes, narrowly missing putts that would have sealed the title. In the end, he finished with a routine par to get over the line.<\/p>\n

“He has a really sore knee actually,” Grehan said of his caddie. “I didn’t know if he could caddie this week, but to do, I don’t know how many holes he did, maybe close to 115 or something, a huge shoutout to him.<\/p>\n

“He kept me calm when things were getting a little bit dicey out there. He’s been very, very good to me and he can retire now at the top.”<\/p>\n

Grehan admitted he didn’t sleep well the night before the final against Moloney. The stakes were so high, the prize so prestigious that it was impossible not to think about.<\/p>\n

“The night before it was always on my mind,” he added. “I couldn’t really sleep that night to be perfectly honest with you because all those things are kind of going through your head but when you get on the first tee that morning, you park all that stuff and you focus on hitting the next shot, playing your opponent and playing the golf course as best you can and go from there.<\/p>\n

“(The Open) is three weeks away. I’m just trying to get all my accreditation stuff and accommodation sorted now. I’m incredibly excited. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, play a major. To be able to do that now… I can’t wait.”<\/p>\n

Reflecting on why he left the professional game, Grehan was candid.<\/p>\n

“When I look at it on a deeper level, I didn’t really enjoy being away from my family,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I’ve a young son at home and my wife Carla. We’ve two more coming very soon. It’s just something I didn’t really want to pursue any more. It’s just one of those things that I didn’t want to do. And that’s it.<\/p>\n

“I love golf, I love competing.
