They have fallen about 11% so far this year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The announcement comes at a time when chipmakers are searching for ways to maintain the decades-long trend of cramming more computing power into smaller spaces, a phenomenon known as Moore&#8217;s Law.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The new chip technology, which bolsters IBM&#8217;s \u200cposition to compete with contract \u2060chipmakers TSMC and Intel, has a transistor architecture of 0.7 nanometers, or 7 angstroms.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Last week, Intel said the new generation of its 18A manufacturing \u2060process, which makes 1.8 nanometer chips, moved into risk production, the testing phase before commercial manufacturing.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">IBM said the 0.7-nanometer chip packs nearly 100 billion transistors onto a fingernail-sized surface, about twice the \u200bdensity of \u200bits 2-nanometer chip unveiled in 2021, delivering up \u200bto 50% higher performance or 70% \u200cgreater energy efficiency.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">To get there, IBM developed a new transistor design called &#8220;nanostack.&#8221; Instead of laying transistors flat, the design stacks them on top of each other in three dimensions, fitting more into the same volume of space.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;With our new nanostack architecture, we&#8217;re not just making smaller transistors, we&#8217;re reinventing how chips are built to deliver dramatically more power and energy efficiency,&#8221; director \u200cof IBM Research Jay Gambetta said.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">In addition to shrinking \u200bcomputing circuits, IBM said the new nanostack technology will \u200bshrink a type of memory circuit called \u200bSRAM by 40%, a far better gain than IBM&#8217;s previous generation \u200cof new chip technology. That category of \u200bmemory is heavily used \u200bin Nvidia&#8217;s new Groq chips and chips from Cerebras Systems, both of which currently rely on TSMC.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">IBM says production could begin within five years. The company has previously \u200blicensed chip technologies to Samsung \u200cand Japan&#8217;s Rapidus.
