Dr David Wrigley, the BMA\u2019s GP committee deputy chairman, said: \u201cThis aggressive list-cleansing exercise has reduced GP practice patient lists by over 300,000 over the past 12 months, equating to practices losing just under \u00a340m in funding for essential GP medical services.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis comes at a time when practices in England are already severely underfunded.\u201d<\/p>\n
The fall in total list numbers in 2025 was the first reduction for at least seven years. While the population had risen during that period, the numbers recorded on GP lists had increased far more.<\/p>\n
In 2017 there were 58.4 million on GP lists and the population was 55 million \u2013 a gap of around 2.8 million.<\/p>\n
Since then the number of patients on the lists has risen to 63.4 million \u2013 a rise of five million, while the population rose by only three million.<\/p>\n
The union insisted doctors did not expect to be paid for services that were not delivered, but said practices had insufficient funding, so ended up relying on payments based on list sizes.<\/p>\n
