PA\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legal &amp; General handles the King\u2019s staff pension schemes, official accounts have shown in disclosures of the monarch\u2019s financial activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first annual account of the King\u2019s tax bill and sovereign activities, it was revealed that Charles III was among the top 100 taxpayers in the country. The <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6a3d589fda47783d87723b5a\/The_Sovereign_Grant_and_Sovereign_Grant_Reserve_-_Annual_Report_and_Accounts.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">accounts<\/a> also uncovered details about his staff, investments and\u00a0 the royal household\u2019s financial reserves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The King paid \u00a312.9m in tax in the financial year between 2024 and 2025 while the heir to the throne, Prince William, paid \u00a37.76m.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charles III is the first monarch to publish his tax bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accounts also showed that public funding via a government grant to the Royal Household would double in three years to \u00a399.9m. The household received \u00a351.8m in 2024-25, with spending to fund cybersecurity and maintenance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The near-\u00a3100m grant is set to come after \u00a3137.9m will be spent the year before, mostly to complete a renovation of Buckingham Palace.\u00a0This comes as the government has tweaked the terms of a <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6a3cedc833bc5beefd3c49ae\/Report_of_the_Royal_Trustees_Sovereign_Grant_Review_2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">financial agreement<\/a> with the Crown Estate, the King\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6a3d467433bc5beefd3c4b2b\/The_Crown_Estate_Integrated_Annual_Report_and_Accounts_2025_to_2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">commercial<\/a> property and land arm, which put more cash aside for capital investment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Royal Household spent less than he received in income in 2024-25, allowing reserves to be topped up by around \u00a31m.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Details in the Sovereign Grant annual report also revealed that the King would not move into Buckingham Palace and he would instead stay at Clarence House near The Mall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>King\u2019s staff: Pay differences and pension perks<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Details about the King\u2019s staff also suggest that payroll costs for the King jumped due to an increase in employees and a rise in the national living wage in April 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/king-charles-to-publish-tax-bill-for-transparency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">King Charles to publish tax bill for \u2018transparency\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was also a rise in housekeeping and hospitality costs between 2024 and 2025 as the King put on more catered events.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The median pay for staff working for the King was \u00a334,766. The lower quartile of staff was \u00a328,810 in the year while some courtiers on a committee that organise state visits, garden parties and receptions were paid up to \u00a3230,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cost of full-time staff was \u00a320m in 2025, according to the King\u2019s accounts, while the number of employees rose to 539 people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Documents revealed that workers have been auto-enrolled into a pension scheme handled by Legal &amp; General, with the monarch\u2019s activities contributing 15 per cent of salaries into the fund. The Royal Household paid in \u00a33m over 2024-25.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tax disclosure questioned<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dan Neidle, of Tax Policy Associates, has questioned the \u201cpoint of this exercise\u201d in disclosing the tax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/legal-general-shares-slide-after-profit-disappoints\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said there were questions over how the King separates official and personal expenses, adding there remained problems around transparency.
