Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s efforts to brand the US government with his name and image advanced on Friday when the White House unveiled new images of a passport watermarked with his portrait to mark America\u2019s 250th anniversary.<\/p>\n

The White House called it simply the \u201cpatriot passport\u201d, while on Truth Social the president introduced it as \u201cThe U.S.A.\u2019s New Passport, which says, \u2018Welcome, but be good!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The state department says<\/a> the limited-edition commemorative US passport was created \u201cto commemorate the historic occasion of America\u2019s 250th anniversary and will be issued at the Washington Passport Agency in Washington, DC starting on July 6, 2026, while supplies last\u201d.<\/p>\n

The state department said it would issue a commemorative passport in April<\/a>, but the finished item features different artwork.<\/p>\n

The previous headshot of the president, looking stern, had been replaced with a three-quarter-length portrait of him leaning over the Resolute desk with balled fists, taken by White House photographer Daniel Torok, with Trump looking sterner. The photo also hangs<\/a> in the Smithsonian America\u2019s Presidents exhibition.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s portrait is surrounded by text from the declaration of independence, with his signature and \u201cUnited States of America\u201d written underneath.<\/p>\n

The facing page shows an image of the founders signing the declaration of independence that appears to be based on a painting by John Trumbull currently on display at the Yale University Art Gallery.<\/a><\/p>\n

Beyond his gaze, at least one of Trump\u2019s signature decorative flourishes appears on the passport \u2013 it comes with a \u201cFreedom 250\u201d gold flag on the back cover. Previously Trump\u2019s signature was in gold, and \u201c250\u201d did not appear. Now his signature is in black and \u201c250\u2033 is written in gold.<\/p>\n

The plans for Trump coins and the passport have been criticized by Democrats<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Democratic<\/a> lawmakers called on the administration to halt production of a commemorative 250th anniversary solid-gold coin<\/a> that would bear the same image of the president as on the new passport and the words \u201cFIGHT FIGHT FIGHT\u201d \u2013 a reference to his chant after an assassination attempt<\/a> in Butler, Pennsylvania, almost two years ago.<\/p>\n

The Democratic senators Elizabeth Warren, of Massachusetts, and Ron Wyden, of Oregon, said the coin project should be dropped following reports that some gold used by the US Mint came from countries where gold is mined illegally.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the very least, the mint should ensure that a coin intended to honor the nation\u2019s 250th anniversary is not made of gold linked to exploitation and criminal activity,\u201d the senators said, adding that the coin \u201cis more befitting a monarchy than a democracy\u201d.<\/p>\n
