\n\tJesse Eisenberg<\/a> opened up to Variety about what it was like turning down the opportunity to return as Facebook mastermind Mark Zuckerberg<\/a> in Aaron Sorkin\u2019s \u201cThe Social Network\u201d sequel, \u201cThe Social Reckoning<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s an honor to speak to Aaron in any capacity, because he\u2019s so articulate and charming and so bright,\u201d Eisenberg told Variety at Sunday\u2019s Los Angeles premiere of \u201cMinions & Monsters.\u201d \u201cWe talked about doing the movie for several days. The way Aaron speaks, he speaks so wonderfully, as he writes that, in a way, if you\u2019re not going to do something with him, it feels almost like you\u2019re letting down America.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tHe added, \u201cI just told him I\u2019m moving in different directions in my life, and you know, what he said sums it up nicely. I don\u2019t want to be associated with that character, but all of my reasons for not wanting to do the movie have nothing to do with how wonderful the movie is, and will be, and I\u2019m sure is already.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jesse Eisenberg recalls telling Aaron Sorkin he didn\u2019t want to reprise his role as Mark Zuckerberg in \u201cThe Social Reckoning,\u201d saying he was \u201cmoving in different directions\u201d and no longer wanted to be \u201cassociated with the character\u201d:<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier in June, Sorkin told Vanity Fair that he spent three days trying to convince Eisenberg<\/a> to return as Zuckerberg, but ultimately, he no longer wanted to be \u201cconflated\u201d with the tech mogul. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI felt like it belonged to him, and he was certainly battle-tested,\u201d Sorkin said. \u201cHe simply did not want to be conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore, that he has his problems with the guy. He doesn\u2019t like kids coming up to him in airports with business cards that say \u2018I\u2019m CEO, bitch\u2019 for him to sign.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Social Reckoning,\u201d which sees Jeremy Strong step into the role of Zuckerberg, follows Facebook engineer Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White), whose reporting scrutinized the company\u2019s internal workings. A 2021 investigative series exposed Facebook\u2019s damaging effects on teens and its role in circulating misinformation, including content linked to political violence.<\/p>\n
