\u201cIt\u2019s about bringing cultural vitality, building civic pride, building the visitor economy and helping our town thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n
The caf\u00e9 aspect of the scheme would be to the rear of the building, where modern tiles would be replaced with oak flooring to match the rest of the venue, and seating would overlook the garden and River Trent.<\/p>\n
A popular superstition linked to the building is that it was originally a \u2018Coffee Palace\u2019 founded by Lady Ossington as a place to meet without the temptation of alcohol \u2014 and that if it is served on the premises the tee-totaller\u2019s ghost protests.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would encourage them not to sell alcohol,\u201d Mr Skinner added, half in jest.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to see the business flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dawn Campbell commented on the scheme \u201cpredominantly replacing modern with traditional\u201d, and noted a positive public comment which stated: \u201cThis proposal works with the building’s character, breathing life back into it in a way that respects its past while giving it a meaningful future.\u201d<\/p>\n
The committee unanimously lodged no objection to the plans.<\/p>\n
