{"id":663800,"date":"2026-06-29T05:00:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T05:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/663800\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T05:00:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T05:00:16","slug":"newark-town-council-voices-support-for-conversion-of-the-ossington-to-art-gallery-and-cafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/663800\/","title":{"rendered":"Newark Town Council voices support for conversion of The Ossington to art gallery and caf\u00e9"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new art gallery would be a \u201cgreat use\u201d of Newark\u2019s iconic Ossington, councillors have said as they show their support for the scheme.<\/p>\n<p>New life could be breathed into one of the town\u2019s most historic buildings which has sat vacant since 2025, with <a href=\"https:\/\/newarkadvertiser.co.uk\/\/news\/exciting-bid-to-convert-historic-town-building-into-art-gall-9470174\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plans submitted to transform the space into a contemporary art gallery<\/a> and caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Contemporary Art Newark, a community interest company, has applied to Newark and Sherwood District Council to make the changes, which would include modern additions of a bar, counter and pizza oven removed, alterations to internal walls, the original ceiling preserved, and a freestanding display system installed to create flexible exhibition space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1990 1490\" alt=\"Mark Enstone, director of Contemporary Art Newark CIC at The Ossington. Photo: Iliffe Media<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a great use of the building, and a great location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since it opened in 1882, The Ossington has served as a hotel, tax office, pub, Mr Haddock fish restaurant and chain pizza restaurant Zizzi \u2014 and was most recently occupied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarkadvertiser.co.uk\/news\/cafe-announces-closure-after-facing-challenges-9409762\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stray\u2019s caf\u00e9, which left the premises in 2025.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are hopes that the new use would see it become a valued community space \u2014 with showcases of nationally recognised artists, workshops, events, and a redesigned courtyard garden for visitors to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>Contemporary Art Newark director Mark Enstone said: &#8220;It\u2019s an art gallery.
