It exposed, in the clearest possible way, the consequences of years of underinvestment in the hospital estate.

“For years I’ve been raising concerns about the condition of Inverclyde Royal Hospital. The Scottish Government must stop kicking this issue into the long grass.

“The promised façade replacement has already been delayed for too long, and it is now obvious that the commitment to complete the work by 2026 will not be met.

“I’m asking the Cabinet Secretary to bring NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde around the table urgently and agree a clear, deliverable plan to replace the façade and secure the future of Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

“My constituents deserve confidence that their local hospital is safe, resilient and fit for the future.”

Mr McCluskey has also requested an urgent meeting with the Cabinet Secretary to discuss the Scottish Government’s response and the long-term investment needed to safeguard the hospital.

The Tele revealed earlier this year that bosses had been forced to close rooms at the hospital as a result of water ingress, and that two patients contracted a hospital acquired infection – forcing an environmental review.

Following this, Mr McCluskey wrote to the health board demanding more information about the scale of the water ingress.

In response to Mr McCluskey’s letter, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has admitted that there is a ‘long-standing and recurring’ impact as a result of leaks in main medical wards and general admissions.

In a parliamentary statement issued this week, the Scottish Government’s cabinet secretary for health Angela Constance confirmed that officials are due to meet with NHSGGC to discuss investment at Inverclyde Royal Hospital on Monday.

Regarding Friday’s incident, a Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board spokesperson said: “Following a severe and sudden volume of rainfall on Friday afternoon, there was water ingress in some areas of Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

“Estates teams attended promptly and remained on site until the situation was fully addressed.

“There has been no impact on patient care or service delivery, and no wards were impacted. Affected areas have been cleaned, made safe, and are fully operational.

“All services continue to function as normal, with no disruption experienced.”

Addressing the wider points raised about investment in the hospital, they added: “NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is committed to caring for our patients in an environment that is appropriate for their needs.

“We have made a long‑term commitment to improvement works at Inverclyde Royal Hospital (IRH), and we also have a rolling programme of maintenance and replacement at IRH and across the NHSGGC estate.

“All reported instances are assessed promptly and, where appropriate, actively managed by our Estates teams with input from our Infection Prevention and Control colleagues.

“Following discussions with Scottish Government, it has been determined that the facade project would not be funded as part of the programme of Business Continuity Planning.

“The Scottish Government has requested that boards submit their three primary investment priorities as part of a new strategic assessment process by 31 March 2027. Accordingly, a strategic assessment will be developed and reviewed by the board prior to submission to the Scottish Government.”

Health Secretary Angela Constance said: “I am concerned by scenes like this – patients and staff should not have to deal with flooding to access or deliver healthcare.

“Our decision to reset the Monklands project creates greater flexibility within the capital programme, allowing us to accelerate work to improve the exterior of Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

“Officials are meeting NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde on Monday to discuss how we can move this forward at pace.”

Staff were forced to put out large yellow bins to try to catch the cascading water, which affected…

[43
102,2960,56,54,55
post-664472","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-healthcare","tag-health","tag-healthcare","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
