Alan Carr<\/a>\u2019s ex-husband Paul Drayton has said he was \u201coverlooked and dismissed\u201d as a \u201cnobody\u201d during their marriage, as he promotes his new memoir Ride \u2013 Or Die Trying.<\/p>\n Speaking to PA (via The Mirror<\/a>), Drayton said the book is partly about being seen in his own right.<\/p>\n The 54-year-old said: \u201cIn the past, I think I have been overlooked and dismissed because I\u2019m a \u2018nobody\u2019, basically, everyone just knows who I was married to.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Thanks for registering! You can update your email subscriptions at any time in the He added: \u201cThat\u2019s partly one of the reasons why I\u2019ve written the book \u2013 I\u2019m not just their ex-husband, I\u2019m my own independent person.\u201d<\/p>\n Drayton and Carr were married in 2018 after 10 years together. Their wedding took place in Los Angeles and was officiated by Adele. They announced their separation in 2022<\/a> following Drayton\u2019s conviction for drunk driving<\/a>.<\/p>\n Why he wrote the memoir<\/p>\n Drayton said he \u201copened [himself] bare\u201d in the memoir and wanted people to hear his \u201ctrue\u201d story. He also said he wanted to be seen as more than \u201cjust \u2018the alcoholic\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n In the interview, Drayton reflected on growing up in 1970s Sunderland and the shame he felt about being gay back then.<\/p>\n He said he \u201cdidn\u2019t want to be gay\u201d because it was considered \u201cwrong\u201d, and described trying to \u201csuppress\u201d his sexuality, telling himself he would \u201cget a wife\u201d and \u201cbe normal\u201d.<\/p>\n Coming out, alcohol and sobriety<\/p>\n Drayton said he came out as gay aged 17 at his brother\u2019s stag-do after drinking, explaining that alcohol gave him the \u201ccourage\u201d to \u201ctalk about things more openly and freely\u201d. <\/p>\n He linked that to anxiety, and said alcohol later became a way to self-medicate his then-undiagnosed ADHD, describing his brain as a \u201cwashing machine\u201d. Drayton said he may have been a functioning alcoholic for 20 years.<\/p>\n He said he hit \u201crock bottom\u201d in 2022 and described himself as a \u201cbroken man\u201d. Drayton said he has been sober since then, calling sobriety \u201cdaily work\u201d and saying he is proud of keeping it up. <\/p>\n Share your thoughts!
