\n The programme offers a range of activities, including track sessions, social rides, bike maintenance workshops and leadership training.\n<\/p>\n

\n It also includes a cycling ambassador scheme, where S6 pupils mentor and support younger cyclists within the school.\n<\/p>\n

\n The initiative forms part of the school’s wider Pedal Power Porty strategy, which has already introduced more than 150 young people to cycling through activities including mountain biking, ambassador programmes and overseas cycling opportunities.\n<\/p>\n

\n The project also takes inspiration from the school’s history. In 1952, Portobello High became one of the first schools in Edinburgh<\/a> to send 40 girls to Glenmore Lodge for outdoor adventure activities.\n<\/p>\n

\n Delivered in partnership with Livity Youth Scotland, the programme aims to remove barriers to participation and include pupils from across the Portobello and Craigmillar communities.\n<\/p>\n

\n The launch comes as Edinburgh prepares to host the Grand D\u00e9part of the Tour de France<\/a> in 2027.\n<\/p>\n

\n The school is exploring opportunities for participants to attend stages of the Tour de France Femmes and take part in a cycling challenge linked to the arrival of the Tour.\n<\/p>\n

\n Organisers hope the programme will continue to expand and inspire more young women to take up cycling.\n<\/p>\n

\n Councillor Stephen Jenkinson, transport and environment convener at the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “I\u2019m delighted to see this new initiative getting off the ground, and I have no doubt that it will see many girls benefitting in the months and years to come.\n<\/p>\n

\n “Developing an interest in cycling at a young age sets you up for a lifetime of adventure, health, and excitement.”\n<\/p>\n

\n Iris, an S6 cycling ambassador, said: “One of the things I’m most excited about is seeing girls realise they can do things they never thought possible.\n<\/p>\n

\n “Cycling has given me confidence, independence and some amazing experiences, and now we have the opportunity to help other girls discover that for themselves.\n<\/p>\n
