Increasingly, indie horror films are making their way from the margins of the genre into the mainstream. We’ve seen it happen with Danny and Michael Philippou’s\u00a0Talk to Me<\/a>\u00a0and Zach Cregger’s\u00a0Weapons<\/a> (which won Amy Madigan an Oscar earlier this year). But now the internet has a new horror obsession (pun very much intended) \u2013 an unsettling psychological horror film from Curry Barker called Obsession.<\/p>\n

It premiered back in 2025 at the Toronto International Film Festival<\/a> as part of its Midnight Madness block \u2013 but it’s finally gotten its wider cinematic release, and already has a Letterbox review rating akin to that of Interstellar<\/a>. Leading lady Inde Navarrette<\/a> pulls off some of the most intense and superb acting we’ve seen this year \u2013 and we expect her star will only grow.<\/p>\n

The film’s theatrical release was extended until the end of June due to its unexpected box office success.<\/p>\n

The film was originally slated for a Tuesday 2 June 2026 digital release on Amazon Prime<\/a> Video. However, its strong performance in cinemas has prompted Focus Features to break from its usual 17-day streaming window.<\/p>\n

An official streaming release date remains unconfirmed. However, Obsession\u00a0is now available to rent on Apple<\/a> TV and Amazon Prime Video, as of 25 June 2026.<\/p>\n

What is the film about?<\/p>\n

Directed by Curry Barker, Obsession follows Bear, a lonely romantic who uses a mysterious \u201cOne Wish Willow\u201d to make his childhood crush Nikki fall in love with him. While the wish initially appears to work, it soon unleashes a far darker and more dangerous version of Nikki, turning Bear\u2019s dream relationship into a supernatural nightmare. The film stars Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter.<\/p>\n
