\n A mystery portrait of an unidentified man continues to intrigue visitors to a County Durham art gallery, remaining a face without a name.\n<\/p>\n
\n Drawn in charcoal in 1963, the man looks out with a steady, unguarded presence. His features are carefully observed, the lines economical but assured, suggesting an artist more interested in character than embellishment.\n<\/p>\n
\n It is an intimate work, the kind that implies familiarity between artist and sitter \u2013 or, at the very least, a shared understanding.\n<\/p>\n
\n And yet, several weeks after it went on display, nobody has come forward to say who he is.\n<\/p>\n

\n The portrait hangs in Bishop Auckland’s Mining Art Gallery as part of a major retrospective celebrating Tom McGuinness, one of County Durham\u2019s most distinctive artistic voices. Titled ‘Out of the Darkness,’ the exhibition traces a life shaped as much by the pit as by the studio, bringing together more than half a century of work<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n \n McGuinness was born in Witton Park and entered the mines in 1944 as a Bevin Boy. Those early experiences underground would come to define his art.\n<\/p>\n \n Over decades, he developed a style that bent and shaped the human figure in response to the pressures of mining life \u2013 bodies bowed by low seams, faces lit by unnatural hues of green and blue.\n<\/p>\n \n His work does not simply depict mining, it interprets it – translating physical strain and emotional weight into something almost dreamlike.\n<\/p>\n \n \n \u201cI find it difficult to express any feelings in words; that is why I paint,\u201d he once said.\n<\/p>\n \n \u201cMy art mirrors my life in the mining community.\u201d\n<\/p>\n \n But long before those signature works took hold, McGuinness honed his craft through portraiture.\n<\/p>\n \n Encouraged by mentors at Darlington School of Art and the Spennymoor<\/a> Settlement, he spent the 1940s and 1950s sketching those around him \u2013 family, neighbours, colleagues \u2013 often working in pencil or charcoal. These early studies are grounded, attentive, and deeply human.\n<\/p>\n \n By the 1960s, as his reputation grew, he began taking on commissions.\n<\/p>\n \n The man in this drawing could have been anyone from that world – a fellow miner, a local resident, a friend of a friend.\n<\/p>\n \n For years, the work carried a label suggesting a family connection \u2013 Cathy\u2019s Dad \u2013 thought to depict McGuinness\u2019 father-in-law.\n<\/p>\n \n But that identification has since been ruled out. When McGuinness\u2019s daughter, Corinne Aspel, examined the drawing, she immediately recognised the mistake.\n<\/p>\n \n \u201cWhen I saw the drawing, I knew straight away it wasn\u2019t my grandad,” she said.\n<\/p>\n \n “There are clear differences – particularly in the shape of his nose. It just didn\u2019t match. It makes you wonder who he really was, and whether someone out there might recognise him.\u201d\n<\/p>\n \n And so the portrait has slipped back into anonymity.\n<\/p>\n \n What remains is the work itself – a study in observation, a moment of connection between artist and sitter, and a reminder of the many lives that intersected with McGuinness during his years in the North East.\n<\/p>\n \n \n For now, the man remains unknown.
