Millions of households are set to see their energy bills rise due to the Middle East conflict after the new energy price cap<\/a> kicked in on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The regulator Ofgem\u2019s price cap sets the maximum amount firms can charge homes on standard tariffs per unit of gas and electricity. <\/p>\n

Based on the new cap on gas and electricity rates, the average bill<\/a> will increase by \u00a3221 to \u00a31,862 a year in July, up from \u00a31,641 in April.<\/p>\n

Failures<\/p>\n

The IOPC will investigate whether Henry should have been given first aid sooner and the decision to arrest. <\/p>\n

What comes next?<\/p>\n

Digwa was jailed for life in June with a minimum term of 21 years, but the IOPC will now investigate the officers.<\/p>\n

The IOPC is also looking at whether race or religion played a role in what happened. <\/p>\n

The investigation could mean Hampshire officers face disciplinary proceedings and lose their jobs. <\/p>\n

Hampshire and Ise of Wight Constabulary is also co-operating with the investigation.<\/p>\n

The probe was expanded following consultation with Henry\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

Global energy prices<\/a> are expected to remain high throughout 2027 due to the US-Israel war in Iran, with soaring wholesale costs hitting homeowners.<\/p>\n

So what can people do to lower their bills?<\/p>\n

Changing to fixed tariffs<\/p>\n

Around 5.3 million households on standard tariffs, who don\u2019t have smart metres, could be overcharged for energy they have already used.<\/p>\n

Standard \u2013 or default \u2013 tariffs can can see energy prices can go up or down.<\/p>\n

Uswitch urged consumers who don\u2019t have a smart meter to submit their latest readings on or around 1 July to ensure they are billed the correct amount. <\/p>\n

Ben Gallizzi, energy spokesman at Uswitch, said: \u201cThere are two crucial things you should add to your to-do list for the coming days \u2013 submit a meter reading and get a cheap, fixed energy deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Around 60 per cent of UK households are on a default energy tariff, known as a standard variable tariff (SVT).<\/p>\n

Lower bills \u2013 and hanging out washing<\/p>\n

Anyone who hasn\u2019t switched tariffs over the last 18 months is almost certainly on a standard tariff and paying more than they need to, said Sabrina Hoque, energy expert at Uswitch.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsing the new average consumption figures, the cheapest fixed deal on the market comes in at \u00a31,382 a year for a typical usage household \u2013 17 per cent or \u00a3281 below the standard rates\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLocking in a fixed tariff now means protecting yourself not just today, but through autumn and winter when heating use is at its highest and energy costs hit household budgets hardest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Consumers were also urged to hang clothes outside to dry rather than use tumble dryers during warmer months.<\/p>\n

Bill payers were also advised also turn off their thermostats over summer to avoid accidental heating costs on warmer days. <\/p>\n

Will prices continue to rise?<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Cornwall Insight predicted a slight fall in October\u2019s price cap.<\/p>\n

But ongoing uncertainty around the Middle East meant the energy market was not going down as much as consumers may hope, they added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are expecting in January for them to go further down than October, but we\u2019re still talking a couple of hundred pounds more than what they were in January and March,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s a ceasefire, if the market calms down, the prices may go down further, alternatively, if it gets worse, prices may go up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Confusion over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, patchy progress of peace talks and uncertain repair timelines to key regional infrastructure mean prices remain high, if less volatile than in the Spring, said Dr Craig Lowrey, principal consultant at Cornwall Insight.<\/p>\n

But even a small fall in October\u2019s price heading into winter would see household finances being hit harder than the latest increase which falls over summer.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cWhile July\u2019s higher prices will be cushioned by warmer weather and lower household energy use, the October cap lands as people switch their heating back on and will have a greater impact on household finances.\u201d<\/p>\n

How could the Government help?<\/p>\n

This week\u2019s roughly 13 per cent increase from the previous price cap in April is still well below the highs seen at the start of the war in Ukraine from 2022.<\/p>\n

Data from Ofgem shows the price cap soared to \u00a34,279 at the start of 2023, with the then-Conservative government intervening to support households.<\/p>\n

Its package included a \u00a32,500 cap on annual bills and a \u00a3400 payment for all households, and more targeted support for pensioners and those on benefits.<\/p>\n

But the measures cost the taxpayer around \u00a375bn over two years.<\/p>\n

Lowrey said the Government has several options available to support households.<\/p>\n

A new prime minister \u2013 expected to be Andy Burnham \u2013 may be open to introducing targeted support for more vulnerable households if prices remain high, he said.<\/p>\n

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has said any support would be focused on \u201dthose who need it most\u201d if energy bills spiral rather than the blanket discounts offered to all households in 2022.<\/p>\n

The Tories have also pressed Reeves to scrap VAT on fuel during the current energy crisis, which it says can be funded by axing renewable energy schemes and green levies. <\/p>\n

Campaigners from the End Fuel Poverty Coalition called for the next prime minister to \u201cfast-track the electrification of the UK\u201d and bring in an energy social tariff to lower bills.<\/p>\n

Warm Homes Plan<\/p>\n

This year, the Government unveiled its Warm Homes Plan vowing to tackle the \u201cnational emergency\u201d of rising energy bills.<\/p>\n

The plan would focus on funding solar panels, heat pumps and batteries for households through low- or no-interest loans and grants.<\/p>\n

Officials have estimated that a three-bed, detached house with solar panels and a heat pump could save \u00a3550 a year.<\/p>\n

But even with the grants there would be additional costs for installation, with a heat pump after the subsidy costing households on average \u00a35,000.<\/p>\n

The Government extended the Warm Home Discount to provide eligible households with a one-off \u00a3150 rebate on their electricity bills every winter until 2030.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Cornwall Insight said: \u201cThat will just continue. Obviously, it won\u2019t have as as big an impact if prices are higher.\u201d<\/p>\n
