{"id":670078,"date":"2026-07-02T16:23:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T16:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/670078\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T16:23:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T16:23:12","slug":"australias-median-wealth-falls-almost-7-since-2020-despite-the-rich-getting-richer-report-says-inequality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/670078\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia\u2019s median wealth falls almost 7% since 2020 despite the rich getting richer, report says | Inequality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Middle Australia\u2019s wealth is going backwards while the richest claim an ever-greater share of the pile, according to new research that shows more than 25,000 people across the country became millionaires last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2026\/jun\/30\/number-of-billionaires-world-ai-wealth-ubs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">global wealth report from the Swiss bank UBS<\/a> said 2025 marked \u201can extraordinary year\u201d, in which close to a million new millionaires were created worldwide \u2013 a record increase in a single year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">While hailing the rapid rise in personal riches, the report also warned that the \u201cgains were uneven\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWhile average wealth rose notably, median wealth actually declined in most markets, highlighting a growing divide between the wealthiest and the broader population,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The median delivers a better insight of \u201ctypical\u201d wealth levels at the middle of the scale, while the average can be distorted by the distribution of outcomes \u2013 such as a small group of very wealthy individuals.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-rh233e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">This effect was evident in Australia, where UBS calculated that average personal net wealth climbed by 19% so far this decade \u2013 even after accounting for high and persistent inflation over that time between 2020 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But this masked a nearly 7% contraction in the median wealth of Australian adults over the period, suggesting expanding wealth has favoured those at the top.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Australia is not alone.<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/datawrapper\/embed\/giPWL\/1\/\" class=\"dcr-olkhl1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chart listing top 30 countries by median wealth<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Through the past six years, median wealth is lower in 18 of the 29 countries analysed by UBS, including a roughly 20% decline in Germany, the US and the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In contrast, median wealth in the 2020s has jumped by 50% in Japan, 20% in India; and more than 10% in South Korea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Saul Eslake, an independent economist, said \u201cAustralia hasn\u2019t experienced as much widening in income inequality as quite a lot of other similar countries, but we have had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/feb\/24\/australia-neo-feudal-society-future-wealth-inequality\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">big increases in wealth inequality<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe biggest driver of inequality by wealth is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/jul\/02\/australia-mortgage-burden-above-1989-levels\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">housing<\/a>,\u201d Eslake said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Property wealth and compulsory superannuation helped Australian adults have the third-highest median net wealth in the world, at nearly $US211,000 (A$306,000), behind Luxembourg and Belgium.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-16\" class=\"dcr-76akua\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a>Free newsletter | When needed<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-vf9hps\">Sign up to Breaking News Australia<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1r7my33\">Get the most important news as it breaks<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1782377121_317_2998.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"dcr-xiq31o\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"EmailSignup-skip-link-16\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-label=\"after newsletter promotion\" role=\"note\" class=\"dcr-76akua\">after newsletter promotion<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jun\/21\/us-inequality-plutocracy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the US<\/a> had the second-highest average level of wealth behind Switzerland, it was ranked 28th of 30 countries by the median measure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Eslake said it was \u201ccontested territory\u201d whether high and rising inequality was technically bad for economies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But he said there was a growing consensus among major international bodies, such as the IMF and the OECD, that \u201cbeyond some point widening inequality detracts from economic growth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cOne of the arguments is that wealthy people save more and so don\u2019t add to growth. Another is that populist policies, which are almost always bad for economic growth, are in part a reaction to widening inequality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">While Australia\u2019s progressive income tax and transfer system helps flatten income inequality, Eslake argued \u201cour tax system does very little at all to ameliorate the market forces driving increased inequality in the distribution of wealth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Eslake said this was one reason why he was one of \u201ca handful\u201d of economists calling for an inheritance tax.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">He said the case for such a tax was particularly compelling given that \u201cwhen you consider about $5.5tn dollars of wealth will be passed from boomers to their kids over the next 25-30 years, and most of those \u2018kids\u2019 will be in their 50s and 60s when they get it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s at all unreasonable that some of that is taxed on estates of $5m or $10m, with exemptions for surviving spouses or partners.
