Donald Trump has said it is \u201cridiculous\u201d for the US to continue its \u201cone sided\u201d relationship with Nato, less than a week before a summit of the military alliance in Ankara.<\/p>\n
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that \u201cThey were not there for us!!!\u201d and Washington\u2019s relationship with Nato<\/a> \u201cis not reciprocal\u201d.<\/p>\n The US president has repeatedly lashed out at European allies over their response to the war in Iran, as several countries restricted the use of bases for American forces.<\/p>\n Trump also insists he wants Europe to take the lead role for its own defence, and Washington has already moved to scale back commitments.<\/p>\n His Truth Social post<\/a> on Thursday included a chart displaying the amount of Nato spending, with the US investing vastly more than a few other member states depicted, including the UK and France.<\/p>\n Under pressure from Trump, Nato leaders had agreed at a gathering last year to boost defence-related spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.<\/p>\n The US secretary of state has said Trump is disappointed that Nato allies refused to become more actively involved in attacking Iran.<\/p>\n Marco Rubio, meeting with the alliance\u2019s foreign ministers in May, emphasised that he expected the rift would be discussed<\/a> at the July meeting in the Turkish capital, making the summit \u201cone of the more important\u201d in Nato\u2019s 77-year history.<\/p>\n
