{"id":672037,"date":"2026-07-03T17:45:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T17:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/672037\/"},"modified":"2026-07-03T17:45:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T17:45:19","slug":"world-cup-boost-fails-to-land-uk-services-sector-on-front-foot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/672037\/","title":{"rendered":"World Cup boost fails to land UK services sector on front foot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tFriday 03 July 2026 10:41 am\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/andyburnham.jpeg\" class=\"media \" alt=\"Andy Burnham speaking at a press conference, addressing current issues, wearing a suit and tie, with a serious expression.\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"  \/>\t\tAndy Burnham is set to become the Prime Minister. \t<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/world-cup-kick-off-times-rewrite-hospitality-trading-patterns-fourth-analysis-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">World Cup<\/a> boost failed to drag the UK\u2019s services sector to growth last month after it recorded its fastest rate of decline in three-and-a-half years as businesses braced for the Andy Burnham coronation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest Purchasing Managers Index (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.spglobal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">PMI<\/a>) from S&amp;P Global showed a reading of 48.8 in June, falling from 49.3 in May.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It remained below the neutral 50.0 point to indicate whether a sector is growing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStrong cost pressures, lacklustre demand and business uncertainties arising from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/middle-east-expats-seek-refuge-in-london-pushing-up-luxury-rents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Middle East<\/a> conflict were the most prominent themes highlighted by service sector firms in June,\u201d Tim Moore, economics director at S&amp;P Global Market said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added these factors had led to \u201cfragile investment sentiment\u201d and \u201celevated risk aversion\u201d whilst consumers faced \u201csqueezed consumer budgets\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PMI reported some consumer-facing firms were hit by the late-June heatwave that left a dent in footfall. Though hospitality enjoyed a boost to demand on the back of the FIFA World Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Average prices were recorded to have sharply increased in June, though at the least marked extent since February. Businesses pointed to intense competition and subdued demand limiting their ability to pass on higher costs.<\/p>\n<p>Job losses continue in services sector<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pace of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/uk-permanent-jobs-fall-as-economy-held-up-by-uncertainty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">job losses<\/a> across the sector also picked up, falling at the sharpest rate since February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moore said services sector business optimism had \u201cimproved\u201d since May but remained \u201cmuch softer\u201d than the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe marginal uplift in confidence was supported by hopes of a durable US-Iran ceasefire agreement and positivity towards business development plans,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/correction-uk-economy-to-contract-as-energy-shock-catches-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u2018Course correction\u2019: UK economy to contract as \u2018energy shock catches up\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, many firms noted worries about broader UK economic prospect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Business leaders across the UK are bracing for a period of uncertainty with Andy Burnham set to take the keys to Downing Street in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the first tasks Burnham will be faced with is finding \u00a34.7bn to fund Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s defence investment plan that the outgoing Prime Minister released in one of his final acts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with LBC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/burnham-yes-to-defence-funding-no-to-crude-welfare-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Burnham backed Labour\u2019s manifesto commitments<\/a> to not hike income tax, VAT or national insurance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he also added he would not make \u201ccrude cuts to benefits\u201d sparking questions over where he would find the cash to fund defence, as well as other commitments he has previously touted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe doubt growth will pick up much through the rest of the year,\u201d Thomas Pugh, chief economist at RSM UK, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven if a Burnham coronation is likely, avoiding a protracted leadership contest, there will still be speculation about the direction of fiscal policy in the coming months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former Manchester Mayor indicated that he would prioritise increasing business rates on warehouses in order to fund tax cuts for high street bars, restaurants, coffee shops and hairdressers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added he had \u201cdeliberately\u201d avoided making a final decision on his Chancellor pick in order to give him time to \u201cset out a new direction for the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/mayor-khan-hails-london-as-undisputed-global-capital-for-womens-sport-amid-50m-boost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Mayor Khan hails London as \u2018undisputed global capital for women\u2019s sport\u2019 amid \u00a350m boost<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\tSimilarly tagged content: <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tSections\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tCategories\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPeople &amp; Organisations\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Friday 03 July 2026 10:41 am Andy Burnham is set to become the Prime Minister.
