{"id":672629,"date":"2026-07-04T01:25:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T01:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/672629\/"},"modified":"2026-07-04T01:25:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T01:25:11","slug":"glasgow-news-good-samaritan-carer-sacked-for-taking-lonely-patient-home-for-new-years-day-dinner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/672629\/","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow news: Good Samaritan carer sacked for taking lonely patient home for New Year&#8217;s Day dinner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Scottish support worker was sacked after inviting a disabled patient to share New Year&#8217;s Day dinner with his family after the man&#8217;s relatives could not take him.<\/p>\n<p>Paul McPhail brought the patient to his home after his brother said he could not accommodate him to ring in the new year.<\/p>\n<p>The brother had given his approval for the arrangement last January, the carer told the tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>A social worker alerted Mr McPhail&#8217;s deputy line manager to the home visit the next month.<\/p>\n<p>But Lifeways Group terminated Mr McPhail&#8217;s employment in April, citing &#8220;unprofessional conduct&#8221; and the development of a personal relationship with the individual in his care.<\/p>\n<p>He had been employed by the care provider as a support worker since August 2018.<\/p>\n<p>His role involved delivering round-the-clock care to the patient at his home alongside two colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>The patient&#8217;s brother had previously held welfare guardianship over him &#8211; though this expired before New Year&#8217;s Day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"0b86e\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"03bc36417e0709bbfdad94e7271c7b39\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%205000%203337'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/family-dinner.jpg\" width=\"5000\" height=\"3337\" alt=\"Family dinner\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Mr McPhail brought the service user to his home in January last year after the patient&#8217;s brother said he could not accommodate him<\/p>\n<p> | <\/p>\n<p>GETTY<\/p>\n<p>After he was reported by a colleague, Mr McPhail was called in to an investigation meeting where he faced allegations of failing to properly record the event and not declaring a conflict of interest.<\/p>\n<p>His dismissal letter said: &#8220;Agreeing to take [the service user] to your home with your family members present is a breach of boundaries and you did so fully aware of the identified risks associated with [the service user]. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not only did you put [the service user] at risk, but you also put yourself and your family members at risk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the investigation, Mr McPhail maintained he had documented the visit.<\/p>\n<p>                SCOTLAND &#8211; READ THE LATEST:<\/p>\n<p>        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"6c20f\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"dbf4c1e007f3c0afa2a31a08775e6429\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%205000%203334'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/male-carer.jpg\" width=\"5000\" height=\"3334\" alt=\"Male carer\"\/><\/p>\n<p>His role involved delivering round-the-clock care to the patient, who cannot be identified for legal reasons<\/p>\n<p> | <\/p>\n<p>GETTY<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;I wrote down that he came to my house and had a great New Year&#8217;s dinner with me and my family.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I even have pictures of [the service user] at mine during it with my family and sent them to [the service user&#8217;s] brother, he was very pleased with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At his disciplinary hearing, he acknowledged he had overstepped professional boundaries &#8211; but maintained he did so  with good intentions.<\/p>\n<p>He also told the hearing about a period of significant upheaval at the care service, as it battled staff departures and the death of a long-serving colleague.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;The place was in turmoil. The [service user&#8217;s] family was upset with prior staff and were concerned for his welfare. [He] was self-harming, agitated and asking for [the member of staff who died].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr McPhail added: &#8220;I feel I was doing a good thing.
