The report describes routine use of corridor spaces and difficulties moving patients through the hospital, contributing to longer waits and a poorer experience for some people.

Catherine Campbell, CQC deputy director of hospitals, secondary and specialist care in the south west, said inspectors had seen “a number of improvements across both medical care and urgent and emergency services”, but warned that “further improvements were needed regarding safety in the emergency department”.

She said some of the challenges would be eased by the new emergency department which is under construction and scheduled to be complete by 2027.

However, she stressed it was “essential leaders keep people safe until these new facilities are open”.

Ms Campbell said the department was operating well beyond its intended capacity, yet staff had improved how they manage people in mental health crisis, using a dedicated suite and removing ligature risks. She also highlighted closer working with ambulance crews, significantly better handover times and a sharp drop in triage waits – down to around 15 minutes from 41 minutes in 2024.

Inspectors nevertheless raised concerns about visibility and early recognition of seriously ill patients, noting reception staff did not have a formal list of “red flag” symptoms and that it was harder to spot deterioration in a crowded waiting room.

Chief Nursing Officer for Dorset County Hospital and Dorset HealthCare Dawn Dawson said: “I am delighted that our urgent and emergency care services and medical care have been rated as ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission following their recent inspection.

“The rating reflects the way in which our dedicated, professional, compassionate teams provide safe, high-quality care for our patients.

“I’m pleased that inspectors recognised the improvements that have already been made, and we will continue to build on this as we work towards opening our new Emergency Department and Critical Care Unit next year.”

DCH Chief Medical Officer Rachel Wharton added: “Our teams work incredible hard in challenging circumstances to manage rising demand and provide the very best care they can to our patients and their families.
