{"id":674387,"date":"2026-07-05T02:44:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-05T02:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/674387\/"},"modified":"2026-07-05T02:44:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T02:44:12","slug":"murder-investigation-launched-after-pet-shop-owner-dies-in-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/674387\/","title":{"rendered":"Murder investigation launched after pet shop owner dies in crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Wiltshire Police have confirmed that the crash on the B4696 near Royal Wootton Bassett on Tuesday, June 30 is now being treated as a murder investigation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The crash occurred at around 6.05pm between Brinkworth Road and Lydiard Plain and involved an orange Peugeot 107 travelling northbound and a black Vauxhall Astra travelling southbound.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The driver of the Peugeot was a woman in her 70s, named later as Barbara Mullaney, who was declared dead at the scene.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Our thoughts remain with her next of kin, who are being supported by specially trained officers,&#8221; said Wiltshire Police in a statement.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A passenger in the Vauxhall, a teenage girl, suffered serious injuries in the collision and was taken to hospital, where she remains for treatment.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Following an initial investigation, a 43-year-old man, who was driving the Vauxhall, was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and causing death by driving while unfit through drink or drugs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Wiltshire Police have now confirmed he has further been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He was taken to hospital for treatment following the collision and has now been taken to custody for questioning.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  On July 1, the Adver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk\/news\/26244432.wiltshire-police-referred-watchdog-fatal-crash\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a> that the public had raised concerns about the man involved throughout the day, prior to the collision.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Wiltshire Police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to previous involvement with the suspect.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The investigation is now being led by their Major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk\/crime\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Crime<\/a> Investigation Team (MCIT).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker from MCIT said: \u201cFollowing initial enquiries, I can confirm this collision is now being treated as a murder investigation and the suspect has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cMy thoughts continue to be with the victim\u2019s family and all that knew her. Click or tap if you trust this link.\">Public Portal.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Following Ms Mullaney&#8217;s death, tributes poured in from those who knew her.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Barbara&#8217;s granddaughter Molly thanked the Swindon and Cricklade community for their tributes, and she and her mother Jeanette kept Barbara&#8217;s shop, Animal Fayre open in the days after her death.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;I would like to share our gratitude as a family for all the lovely comments, stories, flowers and tributes we have received for my beloved Granny, Barbara,&#8221; she said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Wendy Hindley and Lizzie Rose of Indico, another business on the town\u2019s High Street, were among those to lead the tributes to a \u201cbright and caring\u201d woman.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  They said: \u201cIt is difficult to believe that such a bright, bubbly, funny, caring and kind person could be taken in the most cruel, mindless circumstances.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cEveryone, pets and their humans alike will miss her desperately, Elvis our pug certainly will.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cShe was always so supportive, helpful and thoughtful\u2026 thinking of you dear Barbara and your family whom I know you adored.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A spokesperson for neighbouring business The Wild Fig Deli added: \u201cAbsolutely heartbroken for the loss of our dear friend and business neighbour \u2018aunty\u2019 Barbara from Cricklade\u2019s beloved pet shop.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cYou have been incredibly supportive of me and my business, always a smiley face, there to lend me things and above all love all the dogs and animals in Cricklade.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cLife will not be the same without you.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A spokesperson for Bailey\u2019s Dog Walking said: \u201cBarbara was one of those special people who made everyone feel welcome.
