This week, in our celebrity edition, actor, businesswoman and star of Hayu’s The Real Housewives of London, Juliet Mayhew, talks about visiting war zones with her father in her younger years, investing in art at the age of 19 and what she wants her children to know about finance.

Financially, what was life like for you growing up?

I grew up in a privileged situation in that my parents were both academics and medics, so we never really wanted for anything, and my parents were exceptionally generous.

My father’s grandfather was a missionary in Argentina, so my dad had really been brought up on the mission field. They’d grown up with little, but a lot, because they had a loving family.

They always had the house full, they were always feeding people, people were always coming to stay, they were always giving. They had a big house in the Cotswolds. We saw the world extensively. So much of their life was using their money to give back. I never was bought up to take the money that was just for me. The better you do, the better you can bless other people.

And then I went into a world which was a complete juxtaposition to the lifestyle they had lived in. They were saving the world, and I was in performing, and I was entertaining. I was working almost immediately out of drama school.

I did commercials that helped pay whilst I was in between acting jobs, and I was in a very blessed position for that. I had some financial aid and support from my parents. However, I wanted to really prove what I could do, that I could survive and I could be independent.

Juliet says she and her husband have multiple properties and invest in other homes too

What jobs have you had?

I did everything from acting to waitressing. I flew for Qantas for a year, which I absolutely loved. I set up a luxury leather goods business, my factory was in Bangkok.

I did that for a year, in between acting, setting up my luxury leather goods company.

I worked at Legoland for two months, being their presenter and entertainer. I worked as a correspondent for Fox TV. I’ve worked with Opera North, did firms and recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

What has been your most lucrative work?

My best asset is me, because I trained as an actor, and I’m a triple threat. But I don’t look so much at the financial side of things as much as the fulfilment.

I’m so content as a wife and as a mother. In everything I do with my husband, we want to make a social impact and to give back for the legacy of our children.

Do you own property?

We have a couple of private properties – our home in London and a holiday beach home in Cornwall. We’re also investors in Glenapp Castle in Scotland and have several other private investments.

Do you have other investments?

My husband and I have spread our investments far and wide. We’re taxed so heavily on passing on properties, but we’re thinking purposefully about what we pass on to our children – helping them in one sense but also helping them think about what they’re doing.

What was your best purchase?

A piece of art I really wanted that I found when I was 19. I couldn’t afford my rent but I could afford this painting. It was a couple thousand pounds and I’m still absolutely in love with it.

It will have gone up in value but that’s not why I bought it.

What is your biggest financial regret?

I wish I’d invested in Tesla years ago!

Is there anything specific you’re enjoying spending money on at the moment?

I like spending on creating memories and moments. I live so far from my own parents so I think that’s why I’m driven to invest in family memories.

What can viewers expect from the new series Real Housewives of London series?

I went into this series with a bit more confidence. I opened up a little more, was a little more vulnerable.

Juliet Mayhew is an actress and stars on Real Housewives of London.

[29
96,4176,8719,1086,2295,7482,391,56,54,55
post-676069","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tv","tag-entertainment","tag-finance","tag-how-i-manage-my-money","tag-investing","tag-property","tag-reality-tv","tag-tv","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
