This is what makes it so complex.

If you’re Ben Knapper, if you’re Lee Dunn, if you’re obviously the new head of scouting it’s a really challenging one to go and find someone for, because you’ve got two young players there who ordinarily, if there weren’t those fitness question marks, you probably wouldn’t be looking for a left-back, certainly in terms of ability.

We saw a flash of that again at the weekend with Lucien Mahovo and his quality. They’ve been linked, for example, with Ryan Giles, who is a certain age profile. You could maybe put Dennis Cirkin in there as well as players who would come in and be dependable, they’d be reliable, they’d play 30 odd games, but actually is that going to block the pathway of a Mahovo of Ben Chrisene?

Do you go for someone in the Jeff Schlupp mould, who’s a little bit older again, but again there are challenges in terms of availability and probably wages, and who you could attract as well? That was a very limited pool last summer.

Ben Chrisene rose to the challenge following Philippe Clement’s arrival at Norwich City (Image: Paul Chesterton/Focus Images Ltd)

Do you go overseas and look for maybe a little bit more of a ‘project’ who is going to be part of a trio of left-backs? It’s a really difficult search. Of course there’s the lone route as well in that, so there’s so many different routes, so many different strands that make that left back search a complicated one.

Mahovo and Chrisene, when he returns, will be absolutely desperate to try and prove that they are robust enough to at least start that Championship campaign under Philippe Clement.

PD: That final point for me is maybe where this goes. By that I mean in terms of if you get Mahovo, if you get Chrisene fit, healthy and able to handle regular game time, and the training blocks in between, and they start to show what we all know they’ve got, which is that ability, there’s absolutely no doubt they good enough to play in the Championship, and probably maybe even a bit higher if they develop on the right trajectory.

We can all see the potential with Mahovo but I thought Chrisene improved under Clement as well, and he wasn’t the only one. The question mark is can their bodies withstand the rigors and the schedule that goes with 46 Championship games?

If the evidence starts to stack up through pre-season, and that that isn’t a consideration, or less of a consideration in terms of the workload and recovery, does that then flow into where they go with searching for a left-back?

There has to be a financial consideration in play as well, which is why someone like Giles is a non-starter when it’s £10m, plus. But equally with a Cirkin, who is a free agent, that would likely take a substantial salary offer, and also you’d have to claw your way past a lot of other potential suitors, both in the Championship and maybe around Europe.

So, again, that doesn’t feel viable. They tried that with Schlupp and it didn’t come off, mainly because of his injury record, but they took a financial hit on that one. Equally we know Harry Amass would be in the building if they could get him right now if Manchester United said we think that’s the best place for him to continue his development with another loan. Clement clearly liked the player.

Kellen Fisher’s positional versatility was required for Norwich City last season (Image: Paul Chesterton/Focus Images Ltd)

There was a real good connection, and I think it was mutual from the Amass side, but the reality is, he is not going to be allowed out anytime soon if he is not part of United’s first team plans this season. They are not even back for pre-season yet. So these are all strands, but I think underpinning all that is where a Mahovo and Chrisene get to in pre-season.

If they are both fit and available for the majority, then at the very least, it affords Norwich the ability just to maybe take their time and not feel it’s an urgent one. It feels like they’ve done the urgent elements with Andre Brooks, Sam Field and maybe to a lesser extent, although they clearly wanted another centre back, but Bruno Alves.

I could still see a loan if they want to take their time. I could also see them going and bringing in someone from an overseas market. If it was to be a permanent then something in the £1m to £2m bracket. Is there a resale value in that player if, hypothetically, Mahovo stays fit and healthy, and he ends up playing the majority of the games?

If so you can turn that player in 12 months in the market? If they were back in the Premier League, with those broadcast revenues, it is not even a factor. But going overseas could open up much more choice, maybe better value.

AH: I’d go along with Paddy’s thoughts, in terms of if we get to early or mid-August, and Mahovo or Chrisene have proven their fitness, maybe a Premier League loan route. That feels to me a better fit rather than a more senior option, someone like a Dennis Cirkin, who’s played in the Championship, and probably would come in and expect to be playing week in, week out.

The club is trying to develop a younger squad with resale value for players, and to do that you need to give them exposure. If I was Ben Knapper, I think I’d be inclined to maybe hold off until the end of July, maybe start of August, and then if they’ve got two fit options already in the group, look at the loan market.

Philippe Clement has a delicate challenge if Norwich City want to make a transfer window addition at left back (Image: Paul Chesterton/Focus Images Ltd)

We have talked about Kellen Fisher’s versatility but if the aim is to compete for that top eight you can’t have players out of position too regularly. It would be a little bit of a risk, whereas you bring in a loan and if it doesn’t work out then you can reassess in the January window.

I think the expectation is they will do something in that area, and I’m intrigued to see what sort of profile and what sort of player they decide to opt for in that position, but I think whoever they do bring in, if they do, is going to have a real test to get past Mahovo, if he can keep himself fit, because Clement certainly likes him as a player, and if he can keep him keep fit then he will be one of the first names on the team sheet.

 – You can listen or watch the full episode of the Pink Un Podcast above – and don’t forget to hit the SUBSCRIBE button to ensure every episode downloads via your chosen podcast provider

To get in touch with the podcast, send any comments and questions via an email to norfolksport@archant.co.uk or get in touch with us @pinkun on Twitter/X, where our direct messages are open.

If you’re interested in sponsoring the pod, or placing an advert in one of our future episodes, email connor.southwell@newsquest.co.uk

Host Connor Southwell was joined by Adam Harvey and Paddy Davitt for episode 677, recorded in the aftermath…

[33
218,101,56,54,55
post-677375","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-football","tag-football","tag-sports","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
