A serious fire<\/a> inside the Mercapalma main food storage plant in Mallorca<\/a> has this afternoon put Palma Airport<\/a> on pre-alert<\/a> due to its proximity to the runways. The fire is believed to have started in a lorry and spread to other vehicles, including at least one nearby trailer that was parked next to it. Several witnesses report that there have been a number of explosions.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred at around 15:15 on Monday afternoon and has required a major response. Palma Airport\u2019s fire protection plan has been activated, as the fire is spreading towards the airport and could jeopardise some operations.<\/p>\n

So far, there has been no disruption to air traffic, but the column of smoke is very thick and has been visible from various locations; footage of the fire has even been captured from Illetes.<\/p>\n

The National Police have arrived at the scene alongside the Palma Fire Brigade, who are already working to tackle the flames. Meanwhile, residents living near the fire have been asked not to leave their homes, particularly in the village of Son Banya, towards which the fire is spreading.<\/p>\n

Apparently, two firefighters who were on the scene have had to be treated for smoke inhalation; as there is so much fuel at the site, the fire is burning very fiercely and is proving difficult to bring under control.
