Few tennis<\/a> icons are as synonymous with Wimbledon<\/a> as John McEnroe<\/a>. The ever-outspoken American electrified crowds at SW19 during his playing days, demonstrating his extraordinary talent and audacious shot-making on his way to three men’s singles titles and a further two finals throughout the 1980s.<\/p>\n

McEnroe was equally renowned for his volcanic temper, none more so than his unforgettable “You cannot be serious!” outburst<\/a> following a disputed line call during a first-round match in 1981. More than four decades on, the seven-time Grand Slam champion remains very much a fixture at the All England Club.<\/p>\n

Since joining the BBC<\/a>‘s Wimbledon coverage in 2004, the 67-year-old has established himself as one of the Championships’ most recognisable pundits, building a reputation for his incisive analysis, vivid personality and characteristically controversial views<\/a>. Yet much like during his playing days, McEnroe continues to divide opinion.<\/p>\n

While many viewers savour his refreshing candour, others feel he can be excessively critical of players and, on occasion, needlessly disrespectful. Those complaints grew louder when details of the American’s considerable BBC<\/a> salary were made public.<\/p>\n

According to the corporation’s accounts, McEnroe pocketed nearly \u00a3200,000<\/a> for his broadcasting work in 2023-24. Given that his on-air commitments are limited to just two weeks at Wimbledon, the former world<\/a> number one is effectively the BBC’s highest-paid member of staff on a pro-rata basis.<\/p>\n

Despite this, McEnroe is widely respected by many of those who work alongside him, with numerous past and present colleagues making their admiration for the tennis legend abundantly clear. In her autobiography, former Wimbledon presenter Sue Barker<\/a> wrote: “Mac is the BBC’s highest-paid employee pro-rata, and with good reason. The public love him. He was great to work with, always up for fun.”<\/p>\n

Andrew Castle, who is set to be axed by the BBC as their lead commentator after this year’s tournament, echoed that sentiment, telling Globusbet last year: “John is a wonderfully funny and well-weathered guy.<\/p>\n

“I can tell you this, when he is into a match and is concentrating and is engaged whilst enjoying it, there is no one to match. It’s a thrill to sit there and listen to what he has to say.”<\/p>\n

Dave Gordon, the former executive editor of BBC Sport<\/a>, credited McEnroe with taking the broadcaster’s coverage of SW19 “kicking and screaming into the 21st century,” while Clive James, writing for the BBC in 2007, hailed ‘Superbrat’ as “so interesting” and the “supreme male commentator” at Wimbledon.<\/p>\n

The bulk of criticism directed at McEnroe has come from fans, who have accused him of showing disrespect to players by mispronouncing their names and arriving at tournaments seemingly ill-prepared for commentary duties.<\/p>\n

One disgruntled fan posted on social media last year: “Why does John McEnroe have so little respect for other ‘lesser’ players that he does not bother learning how to pronounce their names?”<\/p>\n

McEnroe has also found himself at loggerheads with BBC presenter Claire Balding on previous occasions. The duo clashed live on air during a heated exchange over Novak Djokovic’s conduct in 2024, while Balding was compelled to pull McEnroe up on the BBC’s strict broadcasting guidelines after he slipped in a cheeky sexual quip on air<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The three-time Wimbledon champion also locked horns with Simon Reed last year, after the BBC star dismissed Jack Draper’s first-round victory over Sebastian Baez as “like a practice match.”<\/p>\n
