{"id":680287,"date":"2026-07-08T11:44:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T11:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/680287\/"},"modified":"2026-07-08T11:44:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T11:44:14","slug":"fitness-content-creator-petra-genco-58-shares-the-4-exercises-she-does-on-repeat-for-stronger-legs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/680287\/","title":{"rendered":"Fitness content creator Petra Genco, 58, shares the 4 exercises she does on repeat for stronger legs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Not only does having a strong lower body support health,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/female-health\/a71184633\/midlife-hormone-doctor-longevity-habits-after-50\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/female-health\/a71184633\/midlife-hormone-doctor-longevity-habits-after-50\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"longevity\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">longevity<\/a> and everyday movement, research has also linked leg strength to better cognitive function.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">One landmark  <a href=\"https:\/\/kclpure.kcl.ac.uk\/portal\/en\/publications\/kicking-back-cognitive-ageing-leg-power-predicts-cognitive-ageing\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/kclpure.kcl.ac.uk\/portal\/en\/publications\/kicking-back-cognitive-ageing-leg-power-predicts-cognitive-ageing\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> from researchers at King&#8217;s College London, for example, found that women with greater leg power at baseline experienced significantly less decline in overall cognitive performance over a 10-year follow-up.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">In a separate  <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6239135\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6239135\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a>  of more than 1,500 older adults, researchers found that greater lower-body muscle strength was associated with better cognitive performance. In fact, participants with stronger legs were 34% less likely to have poor cognitive function.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Scientists are yet to determine the exact mechanisms behind this link, but possible explanations include stronger muscles improving blood flow to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/mental-health\/a71691521\/brain-health-improve-80s-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/mental-health\/a71691521\/brain-health-improve-80s-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"brain\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">brain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a36107039\/resistance-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a36107039\/resistance-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"resistance training\" data-node-id=\"18.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">resistance training<\/a>  influencing neurotransmitters and central nervous system function, and better lower-body strength supporting faster  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a71816010\/nhs-walking-rewards-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a71816010\/nhs-walking-rewards-scheme\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"walking\" data-node-id=\"18.5\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">walking<\/a> speed and mobility \u2013 both of which have been associated with a lower risk of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/sleep\/a63078067\/sleep-dementia-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/sleep\/a63078067\/sleep-dementia-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"dementia\" data-node-id=\"18.7\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Whatever the mechanism, it&#8217;s yet another reason to prioritise lower-body strength in your workouts. And it doesn&#8217;t have to be complicated, as fitness content creator  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petrafitness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.petrafitness.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Petra Genco\" data-node-id=\"23.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Petra Genco<\/a> recently demonstrated on Instagram with her favourite four-move leg workout.<br data-node-id=\"23.3\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The workout<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"body-tip css-1c5elkc emevuu60\">For reference, Petra is using two 10kg dumbbells here, but she says that when she first started these workouts a couple of years ago, she used 2kg dumbbells. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart and toes pointed outwards.Push your hips back, hinging to squat down until your thighs are parallel to the floor and your bum slightly lower than your knees. Keep your shoulders back and your hands still by your sides.Push back up through your heels and glutes with your chest proud and open. Lower the back leg straight down until it gently grazes the ground or close to, creating a 90-degree angle in the front leg. Push through the heel and mid-foot of the front leg to return to standing, bringing your right foot back in line with your left. Repeat on the left side. Hold one dumbbell in each hand, and place them in front of your hips with your palms facing your thighs.Keeping your spine in a neutral position and squeezing the shoulder blades, start sending the hips back. Keeping the dumbbells close to your body, lower them down so they are in front of your shins.
