{"id":680377,"date":"2026-07-08T12:52:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T12:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/680377\/"},"modified":"2026-07-08T12:52:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T12:52:08","slug":"with-spacex-starship-japans-ispace-provides-ride-share-to-the-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/680377\/","title":{"rendered":"With SpaceX Starship, Japan\u2019s Ispace provides ride-share to the moon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2060Japanese moon transport company Ispace said Wednesday it would start a new, lower-cost lunar cargo business using the Starship heavy rocket and moon lander developed by Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX.<\/p>\n<p>Tokyo-based Ispace has bought 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds) of capacity for $50 million \u200bon a Starship that would land on the moon as soon \u200cas 2030, \u200cand will build a lunar surface vehicle that \u200bcan host payloads from clients worldwide sharing their ride on Starship to the moon, it said.<\/p>\n<p>The new \u201clunar access integrator\u201d service provides moon-bound \u201cbuses\u201d and can complement \u2060Ispace\u2019s ongoing development of dedicated lunar landers, or \u201ctaxis,\u201d to the moon\u2019s surface, said Ispace Executive \u2060Vice President Hideari Kamiya.<\/p>\n<p>On previous trips to the moon, Ispace used SpaceX\u2019s Falcon 9 rockets for unsuccessful lunar touchdown attempts \u200bin 2023 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The Tokyo-based company \u2060now aims to soft-land three landers, called Ultra, onto the moon by 2030, including a mission that \u2060is part of NASA\u2019s \u200bCommercial Lunar Payload Services program.<\/p>\n<p>While Ispace carries on \u200bits Ultra missions, the tie-up with SpaceX will \u201cexponentially\u201d accelerate its growth \u200bin \u200cthe lunar infrastructure market, Chief Executive Takeshi Hakamada said.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX welcomed the expansion of its relationship with Ispace to fly missions on Starship, a reusable transportation system which, unlike Falcon 9, includes a spacecraft that \u200cMusk\u2019s company plans to take to the moon and eventually to Mars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir integration services provide a valuable pathway for smaller payloads to secure a ride to the Moon today, and we look forward to supporting ispace and their customers \u200bas \u200bthey help expand access to the lunar surface,\u201d Stephanie \u200bBednarek, SpaceX\u2019s vice president of commercial sales, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The relationship is \u2060not exclusive. NASA plans to use Starship\u2019s first lunar landing in 2028 as part of its Artemis program to send astronauts back to the moon.
