\n\tDenis Villeneuve<\/a> and Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet unveiled an action-packed new trailer for \u201cDune: Part Three<\/a>,\u201d marking the latest and most comprehensive look at the highly anticipated final chapter in his sci-fi trilogy.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Oscar-nominated filmmaker and his star unveiled the new footage before an audience full of \u201cDune\u201d devotees and press in Los Angeles, while the global Imax fan event was simulcast in Chicago, Dallas, Toronto, Montreal, London, Berlin, Mexico City and Abu Dhabi. The footage from Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures\u2019 epic will be shown ahead of Imax 70mm screenings of \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe new film sees Chalamet return as Paul Atreides, continuing the story after his ascent to power at the end of \u201cDune: Part Two.\u201d Inspired by Frank Herbert\u2019s novel \u201cDune Messiah,\u201d the third installment takes place 17 years after the events of the previous film and explores the consequences of Paul\u2019s rule as Emperor. And things are getting\u2026dark. Really, really dark. As lovers of the first film know, Paul is blessed with visions of the future, but his mind has grown clouded since assuming control of the galaxy. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe future has a way of talking to me,\u201d Paul intones. \u201cI can\u2019t see what\u2019s ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd Paul has a new adversary in Robert Pattinson\u00a0as\u00a0Scytale, a\u00a0shapeshifter who wants to dethrone the emperor. \u201cWe plan to strike the core of imperial power,\u201d Scytale says. Making it clear that he wants nothing short of \u201cregime change.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a Q&A following the trailer debut, Chalamet teased that Paul\u2019s moral crisis is teased in the books and part of what Herbert wanted to say about the corruptive influence of power by offering \u201ca warning tale\u201d about \u201ccharismatic leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe trailer also highlights Zendaya<\/a> as Fremen warrior Chani, whose romance with Paul has grown complicated with his marriage to Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), and who wants a child. There\u2019s also plenty of Duncan Idaho, the fearsome warrior who died defending Paul and his mother (Rebecca Ferguson), and who has been resurrected as a ghola. He\u2019s sent as a gift to Paul by Scytale. In one sequence, the ghola version of Duncan has a telling exchange with Paul.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuncan: I think you\u2019re way beyond redemption. <\/p>\n

\n\tPaul: Why are you here ?<\/p>\n

\n\tDuncan: To deliver a peace proposal?<\/p>\n

\n\tPaul: Peace is a good thing. Why should I refuse? <\/p>\n

\n\tDuncan: Because it\u2019s meant to destroy you.<\/p>\n

\n\tVilleneuve previously described the film<\/a> as a tonal shift from the earlier entries, noting that while the first installment was more contemplative and the second functioned as a war movie, the third is \u201cmore action-packed and tense.\u201d He has also called \u201cDune: Part Three\u201d his \u201cmost personal\u201d of the trilogy, emphasizing the emotional core of Paul and Chani\u2019s relationship as it evolves under mounting political and personal pressure.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd Paul certainly seems more shaken, less strident than in the previous films, having unleashed a wave of intergalactic bloodletting. \u201cForgive me for all I\u2019ve done,\u201d Paul says as the teaser ends. <\/p>\n

\n\tReturning cast members include Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Pugh, whose role as Princess Irulan expands in the new film. Anya Taylor-Joy also reprises her role as Alia Atreides. New additions to the cast include not only Pattinson, but Isaach de Bankol\u00e9, as Paul\u2019s former Fedaykin death commando.<\/p>\n

\n\tVilleneuve reunites with Legendary for the project, with key collaborators including composer Hans Zimmer and a returning creative team across costume design, production design and editing. Cinematographer Linus Sandgren joins the franchise for the third installment.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDune: Part Three\u201d will debut in theaters on Dec. 18, as Villeneuve brings his adaptation of Herbert\u2019s saga to a close.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI had to tell myself to savor it,\u201d Chalamet said during the Q&A, noting \u201chow rare it is to work on something of an artistic level.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tVilleneuve said bringing the trilogy to screens had taken a decade. <\/p>\n
