Genetics, the environments they live in, what they eat, how much they exercise and some medicines \u2014 including some HIV treatments \u2014 can all play a role. Obesity increases the chances of health problems such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/url.za.m.mimecastprotect.com\/s\/FFGQCRgKRqhmW7g2COsxf1udyJ?domain=pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/url.za.m.mimecastprotect.com\/s\/FFGQCRgKRqhmW7g2COsxf1udyJ?domain=pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/\">Study after study has shown<\/a> that diet and exercise alone rarely result in sustained weight loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Obesity could be remedied by a new generation of weight loss drugs \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/url.za.m.mimecastprotect.com\/s\/huzlCVm2YxHwyOPGSQt4fEndoJ?domain=who.int\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/url.za.m.mimecastprotect.com\/s\/huzlCVm2YxHwyOPGSQt4fEndoJ?domain=who.int\">glucagon-like peptides (GLP-1) <\/a>\u2014 that help control blood sugar, curb appetite and slow digestion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But the medicines cost between R3,000 and R6,000 per month, far too expensive for most people \u2014 and they have to be taken lifelong, or the weight comes back. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">This has opened up a black market for cheaper, but unregistered, untested versions of the medicine to enter countries, including South Africa. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Some local companies, such as iDexis, have also compounded its GLP-1 medicines and have now been ordered by the Gauteng division of the high court in Tshwane to stop making the medicine. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Moreover, the country\u2019s medicines regulator, Sahpra, has ordered iDexis to recall the weight-loss products it\u2019s already produced. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Even some doctors are prescribing illegal versions of weight-loss drugs.
