{"id":681839,"date":"2026-07-09T06:52:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T06:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/681839\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T06:52:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T06:52:15","slug":"alan-dimmick-is-hosting-photography-exhibition-at-wyllieum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/681839\/","title":{"rendered":"Alan Dimmick is hosting photography exhibition at Wyllieum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Alan Dimmick is hosting his collection \u2013 Daytripping \u2013 in the upstairs basement of the Wyllieum until the end of this month.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In 2006, Alan took a selection of photographs of George Wyllie at his home in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenocktelegraph.co.uk\/local-news\/gourock-news\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gourock<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\" alt=\"Alan Dimmick is showcasing his work at The Wyllieum\"\/>Alan Dimmick is showcasing his work at The Wyllieum (Image: Alex Craig)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Two decades later, Alan is thrilled to be presenting his work at the gallery which is helping George\u2019s artistic legacy to live on.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Alan, 65, said: \u201cGeorge had a lot of character. He wanted art to be for the masses.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe idea that art is elite has never entered my head.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI hope that my photos are quite accessible for people.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI don\u2019t show my work in posh art galleries. A lot of it is in cafes and pubs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cEven if I didn\u2019t have an exhibition, I would still be doing what I do.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\" alt=\"Alan Dimmick is showcasing his work at The Wyllieum\"\/> (Image: Alex Craig)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Daytripping is an exhibition of photographs &#8211; some taken on short trips from home, and some taken on planned outings with friends and family.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Many of the shots were captured on jaunts down the west coast.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Alan said: \u201cWe would go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.largsandmillportnews.com\/local-news\/millport-news\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Millport<\/a> a lot when I was growing up.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI wanted to show that daytripping can quite important to people, and this all came about in a natural way.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe photos show that even the briefest of trips can shift how we see and how we feel.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\" alt=\"Alan Dimmick is showcasing his work at The Wyllieum\"\/> (Image: Alex Craig)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Alan bought his first camera in 1977, the same year that he converted the toilets in his secondary school annex into a darkroom.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He started to process his own black and white films in 1978, and went on to study photography at Glasgow College of Building and Printing from 1979 to 1982.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Alan was a founding member of Glasgow Photography Group and exhibited at their inaugural exhibition in Hillhead Library in 1988.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Since the mid-1990s, Alan has documented Glasgow\u2019s contemporary art scene, capturing many of the events and the people that have shaped a significant period in Scottish culture.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Exhibitions of his work have been held at venues including Street Level Photoworks and the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in Glasgow, and Stills: Centre for Photography in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/local-news\/edinburgh-news\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Edinburgh<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Alan said he has amassed a collection of thousands of photographs which \u2018keeps on growing\u2019.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\" alt=\"Alan Dimmick is showcasing his work at The Wyllieum\"\/> (Image: Alex Craig)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Funding from Creative Scotland allowed him to bring people in to help him digitise his work.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Alan said he loves that the Wyllieum hosts creative workshops and said that\u2019s very important for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenocktelegraph.co.uk\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Inverclyde<\/a> community.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He has plans to host dark room photography workshops in colleges.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Alan said the best thing about what he does is having the freedom to create what he wants.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He added: \u201cI still have a drive to take photos of things that mean a lot to me.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI\u2019m lucky that I\u2019ve never lost the curiosity and love for taking photos.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cAs I get older, it gets more intense.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cPeople get emotional when they remember times in their lives.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThey tell me how much my photos affect them.
