Ricky Gervais<\/a>\u2019s dance scene in The Office<\/a> is a classic sitcom moment \u2013 but it left those around him \u201cgenuinely worried\u201d about his health.<\/p>\n

The David Brent actor, who co-created the series with Stephen Merchant, shared the revelation while celebrating the groundbreaking sitcom\u2019s<\/a> 25th anniversary.<\/p>\n

Gervais reflected on the dance scene in a special he published on YouTube, calling it \u201cprobably the most famous single thing I\u2019ve ever done\u201d \u2013 but said \u201cthere was a small chance of heart failure\u201d due to the energy exerted to pull it off.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember after I filmed it, I was sat in a corner on a chair and they were fanning me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I was the blobbiest I\u2019ve ever been. I think I was like 14 stone, no muscles to speak of, just a blob. So, I think people were genuinely worried the way I was breathing afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cTom Cruise jumps off buildings. Do I want to do a little dance? I\u2019ll have a go. It would f***ing kill me now. I\u2019m glad I recorded it to show I did it once.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gervais said that, while the scene was \u201ctotally improvised\u201d, he \u201csort of knew the type of thing\u201d he was going to do when filming took place. <\/p>\n

\u201cI quite like the fact that it looked nearly real,\u201d he said. \u201cSome of them looked a bit like dance moves, and I can\u2019t believe how low I got when I did the crab. I couldn\u2019t do that now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gervais did three takes of the dance in all \u2013 one in which Brent\u2019s colleagues laughed, one in which Brent himself laughed and another with those around him \u201clooking bewildered\u201d \u2013\u00a0and then they \u201ccut it together in the edit\u201d to make it look like one take.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Martin Freeman, who played Tim Canterbury on the show, took umbrage with Gervais and Merchant\u2019s historic claims<\/a> that the show was fully scripted.<\/p>\n

The actor sat down with Mackenzie Crook, who played Gareth, for a BBC Two special titled Remember… The Office<\/a>, where he said: \u201cWhat slightly annoyed me at the time, but only slightly at the time, is that when the scripts were published, they weren\u2019t the scripts \u2013 they were the transcriptions of what had been on telly, so that annoyed me a little bit because anyone who knows any of us knows that line came from you in that moment, that line came from me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cIt was loose, and that\u2019s to Ricky and Stephen\u2019s credit because the scripts were absolutely brilliant. It wasn\u2019t improvised, but it was what I would call loose.\u201d<\/p>\n
