{"id":684796,"date":"2026-07-10T19:41:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T19:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/684796\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T19:41:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T19:41:06","slug":"shakur-stevenson-names-the-welterweight-champion-who-would-have-beaten-sugar-ray-robinson-he-was-way-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/684796\/","title":{"rendered":"Shakur Stevenson names the welterweight champion who would have beaten Sugar Ray Robinson: &#8220;He was way ahead&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many people view <a href=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/boxer\/sugar-ray-robinson\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sugar Ray Robinson<\/a> as the greatest boxer of all time but <a href=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/boxer\/shakur-stevenson\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shakur Stevenson<\/a> believes there is another fighter that would have defeated the boxing legend.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/sports\/other\/sugar-ray-robinson-s-style-explained-the-footwork-counters-and-knockout-science-behind-boxing-s-greatest\/vi-AA27p58D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Robinson was world welterweight champion for five years from 1946 to 1951<\/a>, going on an incredible 91-fight unbeaten streak in the process.<\/p>\n<p>At his peak, he had compiled a record of 129 wins from 132 fights, 85 of those wins by knockout, and after his time at welterweight he moved up in weight and became a five-time world middleweight champion.<\/p>\n<p>When he retired in 1965 he had been victorious in 174 of his 201 fights, but despite all of that success, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@boxingman82\/video\/7658761525699595542?_r=1&amp;_t=ZN-97tTPcJPfrq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a resurfaced clip<\/a> has seen four-weight world champion Stevenson back Floyd Mayweather to have got the better of Robinson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFloyd Mayweather [wins] no question. Not even close. I don\u2019t think it would be a competitive fight. His game was way more evolved than Sugar Ray Robinson.
