In contrast to the flurry of announcements in past years, this season’s transfer market has been subdued so far other than a certain Remco Evenepoel announcement.<\/p>\n

In prior years, pro cycling fans would get transfer news leaking out well in advance of the August 1 date for the traditional transfer season and then a flurry of deals once the date arrived.<\/p>\n

But aside from the Remco Evenepoel earthquake<\/a>, there’s been little in the way of major news on rider transfers this month. In two weeks, just 17 transfers to or from men’s WorldTeams have been announced. There are some notable names on the move, like Jasper Stuyven, Dylan van Baarle and Dylan Groenewegen. But most teams have been relatively quiet.<\/p>\n

Why is that, and who’s still out there? First, the why.<\/p>\n

The UCI changed the transfer window: Historically, August 1 was a kind of “open season” date on rider transfer announcements. But last year, the UCI changed those rules, effectively creating two transfer seasons. There’s a new window (August 1-15) for immediate transfers \u2013 basically addressing the Cian Uijtdebroeks unpleasantness<\/a> from two years ago. A second window, on formal contract signings for transfers taking effect on January 1, is from October 15-December 31.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The transfer window moves to the offseason, and new harsh penalties for breaches of contract.<\/p>\n
