{"id":685671,"date":"2026-07-11T07:48:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T07:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/685671\/"},"modified":"2026-07-11T07:48:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T07:48:09","slug":"meta-ditches-muse-image-ai-feature-because-it-misses-the-mark-on-users-privacy-meta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/685671\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta ditches Muse Image AI feature because it \u2018misses the mark\u2019 on users\u2019 privacy | Meta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Meta has said \u2060it is discontinuing an AI feature launched this week that allowed users to generate images using public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/instagram\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a> \u2060accounts, after drawing widespread \u2060criticism over \u200bprivacy concerns, including from a Hollywood union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cOur intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control \u2060over whether their public content could be referenced in this way,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/meta\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meta<\/a> said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWe\u2019ve heard the feedback that \u2060this feature missed the mark, so it\u2019s no longer available,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Meta, owner \u200bof Facebook and Instagram, had launched \u200cMuse Image on Tuesday, its \u200cfirst image-generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs. The feature, integrated into its Meta \u200cAI chatbot, can use photos as input and lets users edit generated images directly through sketches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The feature soon faced backlash over privacy concerns and being an automatic opt-in for users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Emmy-winning actor Hannah Einbinder, known for Hacks, criticised the feature on Instagram, saying it had been turned on automatically and urging users to \u200cturn it off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">SAG-AFTRA, the union representing actors and other media professionals, also urged members and other Instagram users on Thursday to opt \u200bout of the feature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cAnything other than a clear and conspicuous opt-in for these types of uses of Instagram users\u2019 images is unacceptable, and an utter miscalculation of public sentiment regarding the obvious dangers and harms inherent in such use,\u201d SAG-AFTRA \u2060said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Following Meta\u2019s decision to remove the feature, SAG-AFTRA welcomed the move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWith \u200bthe dangers of nonconsensual \u200bdigital replicas well known to \u200ball, a feature that encouraged that behavior is unwise. We appreciate \u200bits discontinuance.
