{"id":685851,"date":"2026-07-11T10:24:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T10:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/685851\/"},"modified":"2026-07-11T10:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T10:24:08","slug":"new-research-into-basking-shark-behaviour-around-isle-of-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/685851\/","title":{"rendered":"New research into basking shark behaviour around Isle of Man"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Researchers are hoping to build a clearer picture of how endangered basking sharks use and behave in Manx waters, as sightings of the species have risen this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Manx Shark Foundation has been created by shark scientist Gemma Scotts and fisheries officer Tom Morgan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Morgan said that while recent basking shark sightings have been encouraging, there was still a lot to learn about the animals and what influenced where they went.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Following several quiet years for sightings, he said: &#8220;We need to try and work out whether there&#8217;s a reason that they&#8217;ve come back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">With &#8220;plenty of theories to look into&#8221;, it was important to understand if the increase was down to a specific reason &#8220;or whether it&#8217;s just this year they fancied a trip past the Isle of Man&#8221;, he added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Working alongside UK marine conservation charity Mareco, as well as the island&#8217;s environment department, the Manx Wildlife Trust and Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch, the pair spent two years carrying out research before launching the foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Their work has included underwater camera surveys, drone monitoring, analysing egg cases, and research with local anglers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Researchers are hoping to build a clearer picture of how endangered basking sharks use and behave in Manx&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":685852,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[90,56,54,55,4407],"class_list":["post-685851","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom","tag-wildlife"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/685851","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=685851"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/685851\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/685852"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=685851"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=685851"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=685851"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
