{"id":686024,"date":"2026-07-11T12:54:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T12:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/686024\/"},"modified":"2026-07-11T12:54:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T12:54:14","slug":"rs-1-lakh-crore-risk-oil-ministry-plays-cost-card-to-defend-e20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/686024\/","title":{"rendered":"Rs 1 lakh crore risk: Oil Ministry plays cost card to defend E20"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW DELHI: Public sector banks have provided nearly Rs 1 lakh crore annually to finance ethanol production and related infrastructure over the past several years, and any move to revert from <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Industry#href\" href=\"https:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/topic\/e20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">E20<\/a> to <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Industry#href\" href=\"https:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/topic\/e10-petrol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">E10 petrol<\/a> could place those investments at risk, the petroleum and natural gas ministry said in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>It comes amid an intensifying national debate in recent days over the impact of higher <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Industry#href\" href=\"https:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/topic\/ethanol-blending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ethanol blending<\/a> on vehicle mileage and engine performance. Claims of damage to vehicle body parts and engines have circulated on social media, prompting the government to mount a broader defence of its ethanol policy.<br \/>\u201cIt is true that in some vehicles there may be a 3-5% reduction in fuel economy,\u201d the ministry admitted, but rejected claims that ethanol damages vehicle parts. \u201cEvery few months, a new rumour surfaces: rubber hoses will fail, engines will seize, fuel tanks will corrode. What happens to thousands of crores invested by farmers, cooperatives, entrepreneurs, financial institutions and public sector companies in good faith based on a national policy?\u201d<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"4\" alt=\"4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/et-logo.jpg\" class=\"lazy gwt-Image\" data-msid=\"132320322\" data-original=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-132320322\/4.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Public policy \u201cmust balance consumer interest with energy security, <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Industry#href\" href=\"https:\/\/m.economictimes.com\/topic\/environmental-sustainability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">environmental sustainability<\/a>, farmer welfare and prudent use of national resources\u201d, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry also rejected suggestions from various quarters that consumers should be allowed to choose between pure petrol, E10 and E20, just as they can currently opt for regular or premium petrol.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#Industry#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/industry\/banking\/finance\/banking\/bank-credit-growth-at-two-year-high-at-18-6-as-debt-market-turns-costlier\/articleshow\/132315763.cms\" data-type=\"tilCustomLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bank credit growth at two-year high at 18.6% as debt market turns costlier<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat comparison (with premium petrol) is misplaced,\u201d it said. \u201cMaintaining multiple grades of base petrol across this vast supply chain would create an enormous logistical challenge, increase handling costs, complicate inventory management and reduce operational efficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Responding to concerns that ethanol is priced on a par with petrol despite its lower energy content, the ministry said ethanol has become costlier over the years. \u201cIf international crude oil is trading at around $70 per barrel, E20 is actually costlier to produce than pure petrol,\u201d it said, adding that if crude prices rise to $120-130 a barrel, ethanol becomes cheaper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government purchases ethanol at remunerative prices so that Indian farmers are fairly compensated,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>The government sets ethanol prices according to the feedstock used.
