{"id":686450,"date":"2026-07-11T19:09:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T19:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/686450\/"},"modified":"2026-07-11T19:09:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T19:09:08","slug":"newport-man-believed-to-be-carrying-crossbow-shot-by-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/686450\/","title":{"rendered":"Newport man believed to be carrying crossbow shot by police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A man believed to be carrying a crossbow has been shot by police in south Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Gwent Police said they were called to an address in St Edward Street, Newport, at around 23:55 on Friday following reports of threatening behaviour, where a man was spotted with a weapon believed to be a crossbow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They said a 21-year-old man from Newport was shot by police and taken to hospital. He remains in a stable condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McLain said it was an &#8220;isolated incident&#8221; and that police were not looking for anyone else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;While reports of offences involving firearms and weapons are rare in Gwent, we take all reports of this nature seriously and respond to them in a professional and proportionate manner based on the level of risk posed by the available information,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Gwent Police said it had referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A man believed to be carrying a crossbow has been shot by police in south Wales.
